Vermont Business Magazine The Brattleboro Retreat has announced the appointment of Gaurav Chawla, MD, as the hospital’s new chief medical officer (CMO). Dr. Chawla served as CMO at Providence Behavioral Health Hospital in Holyoke, MA, where he has worked since 2012 in various roles including Chief of Psychiatry and Medical Director of Child and Adolescent Services. He began his official duties at the Retreat on September 30th.
“With board certifications in three areas—child and adolescent psychiatry; adult psychiatry; and addiction medicine—we are fortunate to have someone of Dr. Chawla’s experience and clinical expertise lead our medical staff,” said Louis Josephson, president and chief executive officer of the Brattleboro Retreat.
Dr. Chawla is a certified physician executive who received his medical degree from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in Aligarh, India. In 2001 he completed a residency program in Psychiatry at the Medical University of Ohio followed by the completion of a residency program in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Tufts New England Medical Center in 2003.
An innovative healthcare leader, Dr. Chawla has a track record of partnering with regional and state agencies in implementing initiatives to improve access, clinical care, and patient and provider experiences in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Chawla says he looks forward to working with the Retreat’s dedicated medical staff and inter-disciplinary teams, and to collaborating with state agencies, patient advocacy groups, and community providers in efforts to enhance the quality and availability of mental health and addiction care in communities across Vermont and throughout New England.
Dr. Chawla resides on Longmeadow, MA, with his wife who is also a physician specializing in cardiac anesthesiology. They have an 11 year old daughter and an 8 year old son.
