Memorial ceremony to honor Vermont’s fallen law-enforcement officers

Friday event at Vermont Police Academy in Pittsford pays tribute to the service and sacrifice of police and first responders

Vermont Business Magazine Police officers from across Vermont, family members, state and federal officials, and members of the public will gather Friday, May 17, 2019, at the Vermont Police Academy in Pittsford to pay tribute to law-enforcement officers and other first responders who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. at the Vermont Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial. Attendees are encouraged to arrive at least 20 minutes before the program starts.

“This ceremony is incredibly meaningful as we honor those who gave their lives in the line of duty,” said Governor Phil Scott. “These men and women are distinguished by their bravery and willingness to sacrifice themselves for the greater good. This sacrifice is also made by the family members who love them, and they all have my deepest gratitude and respect.”

“The law-enforcement officers and first responders who laid down their lives in the line of duty have given, as President Lincoln said, ‘the last full measure of devotion,’ and we thank them and honor them for their everlasting sacrifice,” said Commissioner of Public Safety Thomas D. Anderson. “We cannot hope to repay the debt they are owed by the people of Vermont, but what we can do, and pledge to do, is continue to remember them, and to hold them and their families in our prayers and in our hearts.”

Friday’s ceremony is coordinated and organized by the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council and law-enforcement agencies from throughout Vermont. The event occurs during National Police Week, an annual commemoration each May devoted to honoring the service and sacrifice of law-enforcement officers. In Vermont, 36 officers have died in the line of duty since 1814, according to data compiled by the Vermont Police Academy.
