Vermont Business Magazine GMP customers are switching to electric vehicles (EVs) after GMP launched new financial incentives on March 14th. The new program offers up to $2,500 in rebates, and GMP has helped customers purchase or lease 67 all electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. 5 of the rebates were extra incentives for low-and-moderate income customers.

“We’re thrilled to partner with customers to help them make the switch to greener driving with these new rebates,” said Mary Powell, President and CEO of Green Mountain Power. “The number one cause of carbon emissions in Vermont is fossil fuel powered vehicles, so doing our part to help customers switch to the cleaner convenience of EV driving will make a difference for the state and the planet.”

Electric vehicles charged in GMP territory are powered with energy that is 90% carbon free and more than 60% renewable.  GMP is committed to having a 100% carbon free energy supply by 2025 and being 100% renewable by 2030. Drive Electric Vermont estimates that fueling your vehicle with electricity costs less, plus there are maintenance savings over the years you have the EV.

“The carbon and cost savings are wonderful! I drive a lot for work and having my new EV is making a difference,” said Mike Skuro of Woodstock, who just got a new all electric vehicle with a GMP rebate. “Over the last few weeks of driving electric, I’ve probably offset 60 gallons of gas so far. With my old SUV I would have filled up multiple times.” Skuro also signed up for GMP’s free Level 2 charger (a $600 value) which helps you fully charge your EV in just a few hours at your home.

“These new incentives from GMP are complementing existing incentives and awareness campaigns to provide a big boost to EV sales - 67 EVs in a month is almost 50% higher than we’ve tracked over the past year. We are excited more Vermonters are experiencing the thrill of driving an EV, and the savings that come with ownership,” said Dave Roberts of Drive Electric Vermont. “Drivers can look forward to thousands of dollars in fuel and maintenance cost savings over the life of their EVs as running on electricity is the equivalent of about $1.50 per gallon of gasoline and EVs are less costly to maintain.”
