Rutland Regional Medical Center issues a Norovirus communication for public safety

Vermont Business Magazine Norovirus is one of the most common causes of gastroenteritis. There have been many recent cases in the Rutland community, as well as confirmed cases at Rutland Regional Medical Center. It is extremely contagious with an incubation period of 24 to 48 hours. It is important that the Rutland community know how to protect themselves and each other from contracting it.

Symptoms

  • Nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhea, low grade fever, fatigue, and headache.

Seek medical attention if any of the following apply

  • An elderly or infant/child with symptoms
  • Immunocompromised patient with symptoms
  • Concerned about dehydration; decrease in urination/dry mouth or throat
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Altered mental status (new confusion)
  • Lightheadedness/dizziness

Prevention

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water – especially after using the toilet or changing diapers; eating, preparing or handling food; and before giving yourself or someone else medicine.
    • Any contaminated surfaces should be disinfected with bleach (5 to 25 tablespoons of household bleach per gallon of water)
  • Stay home when sick and for two days after symptoms resolve

According to the Infection Preventionist at Rutland Regional, special precautions have been in place to reduce the spread of this infection in the hospital. We ask that you do not visit patients in the hospital if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms or have had recent exposure to someone who is ill. Rutland Regional appreciates everyone’s cooperation and understanding during this time.
