Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will impact traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of July 22. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.
Interstates:
I-89 Milton-St. Albans Town – Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. traffic will be reduced to one lane southbound between the Georgia Rest Area and Exit 18. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph within the construction area. Motorists should be aware that fines are doubled when speeding through a construction zone.
I-89 Richmond – Work continues on I-89 in Richmond south of Exit 11. Northbound traffic will be traveling in the southbound passing lane just south of Exit 11 (MM 75.45 to MM 76.79). The southbound passing lane is closed to southbound traffic just south of Exit 11 (MM 77.29 to MM 75.71). The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone. Speed enforcement will be present, and fines will be doubled.
I-89 Royalton – Work continues on the northbound and southbound I-89 bridges near Exit 3 in Royalton. A new traffic pattern is in effect until fall 2025. For southbound traffic, all vehicles will use the low-speed lane. For northbound traffic, all vehicles will cross over onto I-89 southbound and then back to I-89 northbound north of the bridges. Traffic using the I-89 northbound Exit 3 off-ramp will use the ramp crossover north of the bridges to the newly constructed I-89 northbound Exit 3 off-ramp. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zones on northbound and southbound I-89, and to 25 mph on the Exit 3 off-ramp. The speed limit has been reduced to 30 mph with a 14-foot height restriction under the bridges on VT 107.
I-91 Bradford – Maintenance repairs of bridges continue just north of Exit 16 on I-91 southbound where a permanent lane closure remains in place. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in effect through the work zone.
I-91 Derby – A paving project continues on I-91 northbound where single-lane closures will be in place from Exit 28 to just south of Exit 27. Lane closures will be present on approach routes to Exit 29 and Exit 27 and lane shifts will be present on the ramps.
I-91 Fairlee – A full closure of I-91 Southbound between Exits 16 and 15 will be in effect for the remainder of the summer. Vehicles must exit the interstate at Exit 16 and detour on U.S. 5 to Exit 15 in Fairlee. Temporary signals are in place on U.S. 5 in Fairlee. Delays may occur, particularly during morning and afternoon commuting hours. Rolling roadblocks on I-91 Northbound will be in effect Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
I-91 Springfield-Hartland – Multiple single-lane closures will be in place along I-91 Southbound from north of Exit 9 to just south of Exit 7 while a paving project continues. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in effect through the work zones. Motorists should watch for shifting traffic patterns, and motorcyclists should use caution on grooved and uneven surfaces.
I-91 Westminster – A bridge deck replacement project is underway on I-91 over VT 121. A crossover is in effect with a speed reduction to 55 mph. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone. VT 121 at the location of the bridges is limited to one-lane alternating traffic regulated by temporary signals Monday through Friday. VT 121 will be closed from 5:00 p.m. Monday 7/22 through 7:00 a.m. Wednesday 7/24. The detour route is U.S. 5, the I-91 Access Road, and Back Westminster Road.
State Highways:
Bennington – Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., motorists can expect intermittent lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on VT 67A, Silk Road, Matteson Road (Rice Lane), and College Drive to facilitate independent utility work.
Berlin – Night work is scheduled from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning, and single-lane closures will be in place on Berlin State Highway from the on/off ramps with VT 62 down to the intersection with U.S. 302. One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times. Motorcycles should use caution on milled and uneven surfaces.
Berlin-Barre – Nighttime lane closures between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning will be in place on VT 62 from the Exit 7 interchange to the intersection with Airport Road. One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times. Motorists should be aware of grooved and uneven surfaces. Daytime single-lane closures are scheduled to be in place on VT 62 between the Airport Road intersection and U.S. 302.
Berlin-Barre Town – A paving project continues on VT 63, and daily single-lane closures will be in place from the Exit 6 interchange to VT 14.
Brattleboro-Hinsdale – Construction traffic will continue to enter and exit the work zone for the new bridge from VT 142 and Depot Street. The eastbound lane shift that has been in place on VT/NH 119 just after the twin bridges in New Hampshire may begin to be removed by the end of this week. Motorists should be vigilant for changing traffic patterns throughout the week.
Cambridge-Johnson – A resurfacing project is underway on VT 15. Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., motorists can expect moderate delays and alternating one-way traffic on VT 15 from just west of the Village of Johnson limits near Park Street in Johnson to the VT 15/ VT 108 junction in Cambridge.
Colchester – Work is underway to improve the I-89 Exit 17 interchange and intersection of U.S. 2 and U.S. 7. Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 7 controlled by flaggers between the Shell Gas Station and Wiley Road. I-89 will be reduced to a single lane in both directions near Exit 17 during off-peak hours from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. on I-89 northbound and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on I-89 southbound.
Fairfax-St. Albans – Motorists can expect occasional delays and alternating one-way traffic Monday through Friday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on VT 104 and St. Albans State Highway in St. Albans. On VT 104 between VT 36 and VT 105 in St. Albans there will be occasional delays with alternating one-way traffic during daytime hours.
Fairfield – The deck replacement continues on Bridge #6 on VT 36, 7.7 miles west of the VT 108 junction. The 28-day bridge closure continues. Motorists should follow the signed detour of VT 104 to VT 105 north to VT 108 in Enosburgh and south back to VT 36.
Grafton – A bridge replacement project is underway on VT 121 over the Saxtons River. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., there will be intermittent stops on VT 121 and Fisher Hill Road with flaggers on-site to guide motorists. Temporary traffic signals are installed to allow alternating one-way traffic over the existing bridge 24/7.
Hartford – Sunday through Thursday during nighttime hours, motorists should expect minimal delays with lane shifts and alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 5 between Bugbee Street and VT 14, and from North Main Street to the VA Cutoff Road. Monday through Friday during daytime hours, motorists should expect significant delays with lane shifts and alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 5 from the Hartford/Hartland town line to the VA Cutoff Road. Flaggers and uniformed traffic officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
Hartford – Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., motorists should expect intermittent lane closures on VT 14 between Christian Street and Park Street near Bridge #7 over the White River and Town Highway 98.
Hubbardton – Cliff stabilization work continues on VT 30 between Hortonia Road and Columbia Drive. Motorists should expect one-way alternating traffic. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. A temporary traffic signal will be operational otherwise.
Ludlow – Pleasant Street at the junction with Mill Street is closed to all vehicle traffic to facilitate project construction. A detour is in place that routes vehicle traffic from Pleasant Street to Elm Street, Main Street, and Pleasant Street Extension.
Marshfield-Danville – Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic patterns and moderate delays on U.S. 2 from the Plainfield/Marshfield town line to the VT 15 intersection in West Danville. Motorists should expect a gravel road surface on U.S. 2 near the Marshfield Dam, Danville Hill Road, and Joe’s Pond in West Danville. Flaggers and uniform traffic officers will assist motorists through the work zone.
Montpelier – Motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic with flaggers on U.S. 2 from Bailey Avenue to the Montpelier/Berlin town time and on U.S. 302 at the U.S. 2 and U.S. 302 roundabout to the Montpelier/Berlin town line.
Montpelier – Paving projects are progressing on Memorial Drive and Dog River Road where nightly single-lane closures are scheduled Sunday night through Friday morning from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. I-89 Exit 8 southbound on and off ramps are scheduled to be closed for 4 hours from 9 p.m. Sunday night until 1 a.m. Monday morning. Message boards with detour information will be present on approach routes to the project. Otherwise, one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times on Memorial Drive, and flaggers will provide alternating traffic patterns on Dog River Road.
Northfield-Berlin – Multiple single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic will be in place on VT 12 while a paving project continues.
Pittsford – Motorists are traveling over the temporary bridge. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., traffic control will be present to allow for intermittent one-way alternating travel on U.S. 7.
Quechee Gorge Bridge – The eastbound travel lane will be close through fall 2024. Signal permits alternating travel over the bridge. The trail at the bridge underpass is closed through fall 2025. The adjacent trail is open via a signed detour through the visitor center.
Richmond – Traffic control will be present on U.S. 2 Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. with a single lane of alternating travel.
Royalton – VT 14 remains closed to thru traffic from Vesper Road to Meadow Lane until Monday, July 29. The regional detour route is VT 14 to VT 107 and I-89 back to VT 14.
Rutland – A Class I highway resurfacing project is in progress. From Sunday at 7 p.m. to Friday at 7 a.m., motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers and uniformed traffic officers at night between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. on U.S. 4 between Gleason Road and U.S. 7, U.S. 7 between Cold River Road and Lincoln Avenue, and U.S. BUS 4 between Ripley Road and U.S. 7. Motorists traveling on these routes should expect grooved and uneven roadway surfaces with raised manhole structures.
Swanton – The bridge on VT 78 between River Lane and Foundry Street is closed until July 29 for maintenance. Detour via South River Street, Beebe Road, and U.S. 7 (Grand Avenue).
Woodstock – A culvert replacement project is ongoing on U.S. 4 near Valley View Road. A temporary bypass road is in place. Motorists should expect flaggers stopping traffic as required to allow trucks to enter and exit the job site.
Worcester – Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic maintained by traffic signals over the temporary bridge on VT 12 over the North Branch of the Winooski River. The speed limit over the temporary bridge has been reduced to 25 mph. The posted speed limit entering and exiting the work zone is 40 mph.
