Vermont Business Magazine The Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington will celebrate the Mass of Ordination and Installation of the Most Reverend John Joseph McDermott as the 11th Bishop of Burlington on July 15, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Burlington.

Solemn Vespers

On Sunday, June 14, on the eve of his Ordination and Installation, Bishop-Elect McDermott will celebrate Solemn Vespers at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph at 6:00 pm with the Diocesan Priest Schola singing. All are welcome to attend (no ticket required). A simple reception follows in the Cathedral Parish Hall after the Vespers service.

For the Vespers service, you are encouraged to park in one of the city-owned garages nearby (free parking on Sundays) and walk to the Cathedral. Parking will also be available along Elmwood Avenue. There will be limited to no general parking at the Cathedral, school lot across the street, and no parking immediately in front of the Cathedral along Allen St to allow for bus loading and unloading. Limited handicapped parking is available in the Cathedral parking lot on a first-come first-serve basis; handicapped placards or plates are required.

Ordination and Installation Mass

This is a ticketed liturgy; each parish will receive a limited number of tickets to be distributed to parishioners by the pastor/parish administrator. Please do not have people call the Diocesan Offices for tickets as none will be available. Seating at the Cathedral will be very limited for the Mass. Please be aware that the tickets will allow access into the Cathedral building itself; seating may be upstairs in the main worship space or in the lower chapel where the Mass will be live-streamed. Please remember that the Cathedral is not air-conditioned. 

Mass of Ordination and Installation – Parking

Those attending the Mass are asked to park in the Tarrant Parking lot at St. Michael’s College where shuttles will bring people to the Cathedral beginning at 11:00 am. There will be NO parking at the Cathedral or the parking lot of the former school and extremely limited to no parking on nearby streets. Those attending Mass are encouraged to arrive early and be seated by 12:30 pm.

Celebratory Reception

After the Ordination and Installation Mass there will be a Celebratory Reception at Saint Michael’s College. This reception is open to the public.
