Vermont Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Awards

VermontBiz Daniel Routhier, Associate Principal at Rice Memorial High School, was presented with the Department of Defense Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriot Award by Vermont ESGR Volunteer, Ret. Col. Matt Fisher, on June 11, 2024. 1LT Robert J. Dornfried, nominated Routhier for the award. 

Dornfried said, "Mr. Routhier was unwavering in his support of both my mission and took action to ensure students and staff were supported during the abrupt transition by finding a viable long-term substitute and offered benefits during the grey zone of military activation."

An employee serving in the National Guard or Reserve, or the spouse of a Guard or Reserve member, can nominate individual supervisors and bosses for directly supporting the nominating Service member and their family. The Patriot Award recognizes efforts to support service members through various measures, including flexible schedules, time off before and after deployment, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if necessary.

Samantha Roberge & Oscar Omuonya, Registered Nurse, Supervisors, at University of Vermont Medical Center, was presented with the Department of Defense Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriot Award by Vermont ESGR Volunteer, Ret. Col. Matt Fisher, on June 11, 2024. 2LT. Joseph W. Olis, nominated Samantha Roberge &  Oscar Omuonya for the award. 

Olis said, "Both of my supervisors have been helpful and understanding with my training schedule with the guard. They have been allowing me to pursue my goals and aspirations within the career I have in the military, as well as within nursing."

VT ESGR awards

Rice Memorial High School, Freedom Nissan of South Burlington, Trow & Holden Company, and University of Vermont Medical Center pledges support for Guard and Reserve employees

These companies have joined a program by the US Defense Department that fosters collaboration and understanding between civilian employers and their National Guard and Reserve employees.

By signing the ESGR (Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve) Statement of Support, these companies agree to:

  • Fully recognize, honor and comply with the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA).
  • Provide its managers and supervisors with the tools they need to effectively manage employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve.
  • Appreciate the values, leadership and unique skills service members bring to the workforce and encourage opportunities to hire guardsmen, reservists and veterans.
  • Continually recognize and support service members and their families in peace, in crises and in war.
