Vermont Agency of Transportation This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will impact traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of June 24. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.
Interstates:
I-89 Milton-St. Albans Town – Motorists will be reduced to one lane of northbound travel within various construction areas from the Lamoille River Bridge (MM 102) to Exit 19 in St. Albans. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph throughout the project limits.
I-89 Richmond – The northbound passing lane is currently closed to northbound traffic just south of Exit 11 (MM 75.45 to MM 76.79). The southbound passing lane is closed to traffic just south of Exit 11 (MM 77.29 to MM 75.71). Beginning 6/25, northbound traffic will be placed in the southbound passing lane just south of Exit 11 (MM 75.45 to MM 76.79). This new lane configuration will be in effect for the next several weeks. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in work zones. Speed enforcement will be present, and fines will be doubled.
I-89 Royalton – Work continues on the northbound and southbound I-89 bridges near Exit 3 in Royalton. A new traffic pattern is in effect until the fall of 2025. For southbound traffic, all vehicles will use the low-speed lane. For northbound traffic, all vehicles will cross over onto I-89 Southbound and then back to I-89 Northbound, north of the bridges. Traffic using the I-89 Northbound Exit 3 off-ramp will use the ramp crossover north of the bridges to the newly constructed I-89 Northbound Exit 3 off-ramp. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zones on northbound and southbound I-89, and to 25 mph on the Exit 3 off-ramp. There will be some traffic diversions and minor delays on VT 107. The speed limit has been reduced to 30 mph with a 14-foot height restriction under the bridges on VT 107.
I-91 Bradford – The I-91 Southbound permanent lane closure near Exit 16 remains in place for maintenance repairs of bridges. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in effect throughout the work zone.
I-91 Derby – Single-lane closures will be present on I-91 from the U.S./Canadian Border Station to just south of Exit 27 in both directions while a paving project continues. No work is scheduled for Monday 6/24 in observance of the Canadian holiday St. John the Baptist Day.
I-91 Fairlee – A full closure of I-91 Southbound between Exits 16 and 15 will be in effect for the remainder of the summer. Vehicles must exit at Exit 16 and detour along U.S. 5 to Exit 15 in Fairlee. Temporary signals are in place on U.S. 5 in Fairlee. Delays may occur, particularly during morning and afternoon commuting hours. Rolling roadblocks on I-91 Northbound will be in effect Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
I-91 Springfield-Hartland – Multiple single-lane closures will be in place along I-91 Southbound from north of Exit 9 to just south of Exit 7 while a paving project continues. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph throughout the work zone. Motorists should watch for shifting traffic patterns, and motorcyclists should continue to use caution on grooved and uneven surfaces.
I-91 Westminster – A bridge deck replacement project on I-91 over VT 121 is underway. A crossover is in effect with a speed reduction to 55 mph. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone. VT 121 at the location of the bridges is limited to single-lane alternating traffic regulated by temporary signals Monday through Friday.
State Highways:
Bennington – Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., motorists can expect lane closures as needed on U.S. 7 Northbound and Southbound and VT 279 from VT 9 to the New York border for installation of traffic signs. Work will continue into the weekend if needed.
Bennington – Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., motorists can expect intermittent lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on VT 67A, Silk Road, Matteson Road (Rice Lane), and College Drive to facilitate independent utility work.
Bennington-Pownal – Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., motorists can expect lane closures along U.S. 7 Northbound and Southbound as needed for traffic sign installation.
Berlin – A paving project continues on Airport Road between the Granger Road intersection and the Piper Road intersection. Motorcycles should use caution on grooved surfaces. One-way alternating traffic patterns staffed with flaggers may be present one day this week, which could lead to delays.
Berlin-Barre – A paving project continues on VT 62. Daily single-lane closures will be in place between the intersections of Airport Road and U.S. 302. One lane of traffic will be open in each direction at all times. Motorists should watch for shifting traffic patterns during the week, and motorcycles should use caution on grooved surfaces.
Berlin-Barre Town – A paving project continues on VT 63, and single-lane closures will be in place. Motorcycles should use caution on grooved surfaces. Delays are anticipated at the Exit 6 interchange on the northbound and southbound on- and off-ramps at the end of the week when paving begins in the area.
Brattleboro-Hinsdale – Increased construction traffic is anticipated in the work zone on VT 142 adjacent to the new bridge site while the crane is being relocated from the Vermont abutment. An eastbound lane shift remains in place on VT/NH 119 after the twin bridges into New Hampshire, with signs and barrels to guide vehicles through the work zone.
Cambridge-Johnson – A resurfacing project is underway on VT 15 in Cambridge and Johnson. Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., motorists can expect moderate delays and alternating one-way traffic on VT 15, from just east of the VT 100C intersection in Johnson and extending toward the VT 15/ VT 108 junction in Cambridge.
Colchester – Work is underway to improve the I-89 Exit 17 interchange and the intersection of U.S. 2 and U.S. 7 in Colchester. From Sunday 6/23 at 6:00 p.m. to Monday 6/24 at 6:00 a.m., there will be single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers on U.S. 7 between the Shell Gas Station and Wiley Road, and on U.S. 2 near the Chimney Corner intersection. Monday through Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., there will be shoulder closures and lane shifts on U.S. 7 between the Shell Gas Station and the Chimney Corner intersection. Traffic on U.S. 2 will be shifted to the southern side of the roadway.
Fairfax-St. Albans – Resurfacing will occur from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on VT 104 and St. Albans State Highway in St. Albans. Motorists can expect delays and alternating one-way traffic.
Fairfield – The replacement of the deck on Bridge #6 on VT 36, 7.7 miles west of the VT 108 junction, will begin this week. Motorists can expect one lane of alternating travel with traffic control present within the project work area.
Grafton – A bridge replacement project is underway on VT 121 over the Saxtons River in Grafton. Traffic signals are in place on either end of the bridge, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, allowing alternating one-way traffic over the existing bridge.
Hartford – From Sunday 6/23 through Thursday 6/27 during nighttime hours, motorists should expect minor delays and alternating one-way lane closures on U.S. 5 from the I-89 overpass to the intersection with U.S. 4 between Bugbee Street and VT 14, and from the I-91 overpass to the VA Cutoff Road. From Monday through Friday, motorists should expect significant delays and alternating one-way lane closures on U.S. 5 from Kline Drive to the Hartland town line. Flaggers and uniformed traffic officers will assist motorists through the work zone.
Hartford – Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic on VT 14 between the VA Cutoff Road and Christian Street.
Hubbardton – A cliff stabilization project is underway on VT 30 in the Hubbardton Gulf vicinity between Hortonia Road and Columbia Drive. Motorists should be prepared to stop as they approach the work zone, where they will encounter one-way alternating traffic during working hours.
Ludlow – The removal of Bridge 57 and the installation of a pedestrian bridge over the Black River is underway on Mill Street. Pleasant Street at its junction with Mill Street is closed to all vehicle traffic. A detour routes vehicles from Pleasant Street along Elm Street, and Main Street to Pleasant Street Extension.
Marshfield-Danville – Monday through Friday between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic patterns and moderate delays on U.S. 2 from the Plainfield/Marshfield town line to the VT 15 and U.S. 2 intersection in West Danville. Motorists should expect a gravel road surface when traveling on U.S. 2 from the Marshfield Dam east toward West Danville. Flaggers and uniform traffic officers will assist motorists through the work zone.
Montpelier – Paving projects are progressing on Memorial Drive and Dog River Road. Single-lane closures are anticipated on both roads during daytime hours next week. One lane of traffic will be maintained in either direction on Memorial Drive, and flaggers will be present to provide alternating traffic patterns on Dog River Road.
Montpelier – Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic with flaggers in place to assist motorists throughout the project limits along U.S. 2 between the Bailey Ave intersection on U.S. 2 east to the Berlin/Montpelier town line, and along U.S. 302 from the Middlesex/Montpelier town line east to the Memorial Drive intersection. Work will also be conducted at the U.S. 2 and U.S. 302 intersection east to the Montpelier/Berlin town line.
Morristown – Motorists should expect occasional lane closures with flaggers during daytime hours on VT 15 in Morristown (MM 0.319-0.339) for a culvert installation between East Main Street in Hyde Park and Needles Eye Road in Morristown. Construction will be active at the inlet and outlet of the culvert.
Northfield-Berlin – Single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic patterns will be in place beginning in Northfield on VT 12 south of Crosstown Road and progressing north throughout the week.
Pittsford – Motorists are now shifted onto the temporary bridge at the U.S. 7 and VT 3 intersection. Traffic control will be present throughout this week's work hours to allow for intermittent one-way alternating travel on U.S. 7.
Quechee Gorge Bridge – The eastbound travel lane of the Quechee Gorge Bridge is closed through November 2024. New travel patterns include alternating travel controlled by a traffic signal and a concrete barrier to separate motorists from workers.
Richmond – Traffic control will be present on U.S. 2 Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and will utilize one lane of alternating travel.
Richmond-Bolton – Minimal traffic interruptions will occur on U.S. Route 2 between Kenyon Road and Cochran Road Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Royalton – The bridge realignment project on VT 14 near Vesper Road and Meadow Lane is ongoing. One-way alternating traffic in the project area will be controlled by flaggers Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Drivers should use caution when driving through the work zone.
Rutland – A Class I highway resurfacing project is in progress. Sunday through Friday from 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers and uniformed traffic officers on U.S. 4 between Gleason Road and U.S. 7, and on U.S. 7 between Cold River Road and Lincoln Avenue. Roadway surfaces will be grooved and uneven with raised manhole structures throughout the project area.
St. Albans-Sheldon – A paving project is underway on VT 105. Alternating single-lane traffic is expected between U.S. 7 in St. Albans and Poor Farm Road in Sheldon.
Woodstock – A culvert replacement project is ongoing on U.S. 4 near Valley View Road. Motorists should expect one-way alternating traffic between Valley View Road and Blake Hill Way, controlled by flaggers between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. in the beginning of the week. Traffic will be shifted onto the temporary roadway midweek, and motorists should expect flaggers stopping traffic as required to allow trucks to enter and exit the job site.
Worcester – Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic maintained by traffic signals on the temporary bridge on VT 12 over the North Branch of the Winooski River. The speed limit on the temporary bridge has been reduced to 25 mph. The posted speed limit entering and exiting the work zone is 40 mph.
