Vermont Business Magazine Sam Allaire, RN, MSN, recently assumed the role of Chief Nursing Officer at Copley Hospital. Lori Profota, Copley’s former Chief Nursing Officer, accepted a full-time position as Chief Operating and Chief Nursing Officer at Springfield Hospital. Allaire joined Copley in the fall of 2021 as Nursing Education Program Manager. Previously, she worked as a Med-Surg Nurse and as a Labor and Delivery Nurse and has held leadership roles at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Central Vermont Medical Center.

As CNO, Allaire is focused on supporting Copley’s nursing and clinical staff. She is engaged in regular process review to ensure her team has what it needs to optimize the time they spend with patients at the bedside.

“It’s important for nurses to be able to focus on their patients,” she said. “I love looking for ways to streamline processes and systems to make that part of their day better.”

In addition, Allaire wants to build systems of support to help nursing staff grow in their careers. She points to Copley’s LNA and Registered Nurse Residency Programs, to the Nursing & Allied Health scholarship program, and to the relationships with Green Mountain Technology & Career Center and several out of state colleges, as evidence that Copley is taking steps to invest in its nursing staff and to attract and retain nurses.

“We’ve gone from relying on numerous traveling nurses on Med-Surg a few years ago to, these days, needing just three or four,” she said. “This is an accomplishment, and it shows that Copley is listening to and meeting the needs of nurses.” Another of Sam’s current projects is building partnerships with community health partners to improve the flow of patient care and the quality of patient outcomes.

On any given day, Allaire is eager for opportunities to keep her hands in the mix, and she fills in where she’s needed. “I became a nurse for a reason,” she said, “and I never want to be too far away from the day-to-day activities of taking care of people.” Sam was born and raised in Bolton, Vermont and graduated from Norwich University’s School of Nursing. She lives in Hyde Park with her family. Sam’s hobbies include gardening, painting, and building tiny homes.
