Vermont Agency of Transportation This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will impact traffic on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of May 13, 2024. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.
Interstates:
I-91 Bradford - A permanent, single lane closure has been established on I-91 Southbound near Exit 16. Daily, single lane closures will be implemented as needed on Northbound. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in place through the work zone.
I-91 Derby - Monday, 5/13, a single lane closure will be implemented on Interstate 91 Northbound between Exits 28 and 29. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in place. Tuesday through Thursday, that operation will move north and motorists should watch for shifting traffic patterns at the U.S.A./Canada border station area and Exit 29 on and off ramps. Motorcycles should use caution on grooved surfaces. Due to Canada’s Victoria Day holiday weekend, there will be no work near the border on Friday, 5/17.
I-91 Fairlee - A full closure of both southbound lanes of I-91 is in effect between Exits 16 and 15 in Fairlee. All southbound traffic must exit the interstate at Exit 16 and detour along U.S. Route 5 to Exit 15 in Fairlee. Delays may occur along the detour route. Rolling roadblocks are planned for 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. daily in the northbound lanes. Expect slowing of traffic and delays when rolling roadblocks are in effect.
I-91 Fairlee-St. Johnsbury - A single lane closure will be implemented on I-91 Northbound in Newbury between Exits 16 and 17 for maintenance repairs to bridges. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in place.
I-89 Milton-St. Albans Town - A paving project on I-89 begins at the bridge over the Lamoille River in Milton and extends to Exit 19 in St. Albans Town all lanes northbound and southbound. Motorists will encounter a northbound single lane closure from Sunday through Thursday 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. and encounter scarified pavement. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph within the work zone.
I-89 Richmond - Motorists will encounter a single lane closure for both I-89 northbound and southbound passing and travel lanes Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
I-89 Royalton - High-speed lane closures will take place on I-89 Northbound and Southbound near Exit 3. A speed reduction of 55 mph will be enforced in the I-89 Northbound and Southbound work zones. Expect minor traffic diversions and delays on VT 107, where the speed limit is reduced to 30 mph under the bridges.
I-91 Springfield-Hartland - Daily, partial lane closures will be in place on the I-91 southbound on and off ramps at Exits 7, 8, and 9 for guardrail work associated with a paving project.
I-91 Westminster - A bridge deck replacement project on I-91 over Vermont Route 121 is underway. On the interstate, northbound traffic has been diverted to the southbound barrel, resulting in one lane of travel in each direction. A speed reduction is in place. A full closure of VT 121 at the location of the bridges is in effect until 5/15 at 3:00 p.m. The signed detour will utilize Back Westminster Rd., the I-91 Access Rd., and U.S. Route 5.
State Highways:
Bennington-Pownal - Weather permitting, repairs to bridge joints on VT 279 will continue between 6:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Motorists should be aware of flaggers and exercise caution when driving through in this area. Motorists should expect lane closures near repair work. Please exercise caution while driving through this area.
Berlin - Monday, 5/13, through Friday, 5/17, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., motorists can expect traffic delays and alternating one-way traffic guided by flaggers on U.S. Route 302 over Bridge #3.
Brattleboro-Hinsdale - Construction vehicles will continue to enter and exit the work zone along VT 142 and Depot Street. Motorists traveling eastbound on VT/NH 119 should expect a newly line-striped lane shift shortly after passing over the twin bridges into New Hampshire. Signs and barrels are in place to assist vehicles through the work zone.
Cambridge-Johnson - A resurfacing project is underway along VT 15 in Cambridge and Johnson. Monday, 5/13, through Friday, 5/17, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., motorists can expect moderate delays and three traffic control packages with alternating one-way traffic on VT 15 throughout the project limits. In the Village of Johnson, crews will be off-site during peak commuting hours (6-8 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.)
Colchester - Monday, 5/13, through Friday, 5/17, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., motorists can expect lane shifts along U.S. Route 7 between the Shell gas station and its intersection with Wiley Road to facilitate independent utility work.
Coventry - Between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., motorists should expect alternating one-way lane closures on VT 14 over Stony Brook near the junction with VT 100 in Coventry.
Fairfax-St. Albans - Paving started on VT Route 104 between Fairfax and St. Albans. Next week, paving will progress south towards Fairfax. During daytime hours motorists can expect delays and alternating one-way traffic.
Grafton - A bridge replacement project is underway on VT 121 over the Saxtons River in Grafton. Traffic signals are in place on either end of the bridge, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, allowing for alternating one-way traffic over the existing bridge.
Hartford
- Monday, 5/13, through Friday, 5/17, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., motorists can expect minimal traffic impacts on Bridge #7 over the White River and Town Highway 98 in Hartford.
- From Monday, 5/13, to Friday, 5/17, motorists should expect minimal traffic impacts and might encounter possible lane closures and on U.S. 5 near the Hartford and Hartland town line. Flaggers and Uniformed Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. Motorists are encouraged to use caution while traveling throughout the work zone.
Irasburg - Bridge 129 over Black River on VT 14 in Irasburg remains closed to all vehicle traffic. A state signed detour is in place from VT 14 to U.S. 5 and VT 58, to connect back to VT 14.
Ludlow - The removal of Bridge 57 and the installation of a pedestrian bridge is underway on Mill Street. Pleasant Street at its junction with Mill Street is closed to all vehicle traffic. A detour routes vehicles from Pleasant Street along Elm Street, Main Street, to Pleasant Street Extension.
Marshfield-Danville - From Monday, 5/13, through Friday, 5/17 between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic and delays on U.S. 2 through Marshfield Village. Flaggers and Uniform Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
Montpelier - Monday, 5/13, through Friday, 5/17, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic with flaggers in place to assist motorists through the work zone. Wednesday, 5/15 through Friday, 5/17, between 7:00 pm and 7:00 am, motorists may encounter alternating one-way traffic with flaggers in place to assist motorists through the work zone.
Morristown - Motorists should expect occasional lane closures using flaggers during daytime hours due to a culvert installation on VT 15 in Morristown (MP 0.319 to MP 0.339). Construction will be active at the inlet and outlet of the culvert. Motorists can expect occasional lane closures using flaggers during daytime hours and are advised to use caution when driving through the area.
Northfield-Berlin - Multiple single lane closures with alternating one-way traffic will be in place throughout the length of a paving project on VT 12 between Northfield and Berlin. Motorcyclists should use caution on roughened surfaces. Expect delays.
Pittsford - A bridge replacement project on U.S. Route 7 at the intersection of VT 3 is underway. Motorists can expect traffic control present on U.S. 7, allowing for intermittent one-way of alternating travel between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Quechee Gorge Bridge - The eastbound travel lane of the Quechee Gorge Bridge is closed through October and November of 2024. New travel patterns include alternating travel controlled by a traffic signal and a concrete barrier to separate motorists from workers.
Richmond-Bolton - A roadway resurfacing project continues along U.S. Route 2. Sunday through Thursday, 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. motorists can expect traffic control present allowing for alternating single lane travel on U.S. 2 between Kenyon Road and Lemroy Court.
Richmond - The replacement of Bridge #29 along U.S. Route 2 over I-89 continues this week. Drivers may encounter periodic lane closures with traffic control present to allow for one lane of alternating travel.
Royalton - Work resumes on the Royalton VT-14 bridge realignment project. There will be minimal traffic delays.
Rutland
- A Class I highway resurfacing project is in progress. Sunday, 5/12, through Thursday, 5/16, 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., motorists can expect lane closures, uneven surfaces, and delays on U.S. Route 4 between Gleason Road and U.S. Route 7, and on U.S. 7 within the project limits. Flaggers and UTOs will be on-site to assist with traffic control, including intermittent alternating one-way traffic.
- Work is continuing on the signal replacement taking place at U.S. Route 7 and Cold River Rd. Motorists can expect daily lane closures as needed with a uniformed traffic officer and flaggers assisting traffic. New concrete curb has been installed on the west side of the intersection with continuing work on new curb for the east side the rest of this week and early next followed by new sidewalk.
St. Albans-Sheldon - A resurfacing project is underway along VT 105 in St Albans to Sheldon Mile Marker 2.0. From 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Motorists can expect moderate delays with alternating one-way traffic.
Worcester - Motorists should expect alternating one-way traffic maintained by traffic signals over the temporary bridge located on VT 12 over the North Branch of the Winooski River. The speed limit over the temporary bridge has been reduced to 25 mph. Motorists may encounter trucks entering and exiting the work zone. The posted speed limit entering and exiting the work zone is 40 mph.
Canada:
I-89 Highgate Springs - Monday, 5/13 from 6:00 a.m. to Tuesday, 5/14, at 5 p.m., travelers to Saint-Armand, Quebec, can expect delays between Avenue Montgomery and the Route 133 traffic circle due to a resurfacing project. Contra-flow traffic on Rte 133 as well as alternate traffic on the Chemin Champlain Ramp is planned, and traffic speed in work zones will be reduced to 35 mph.
