Event gives students personal finance management experience

A NorthCountry employee reviews grocery options with two students at the Financial Reality Fair at the Cold Hollow Career Center in Enosburg.

Vermont Business Magazine Students at Cold Hollow Career Center recently tested their financial savvy at a Financial Reality Fair presented by NorthCountry Federal Credit Union. Each participant was assigned a career and income upon which to base their choices for housing, transportation, groceries, childcare, and additional expenses such as entertainment and technology.

“Students benefit from the opportunity to make important financial choices in this practice environment before they face them in the real world,” said Jeff Smith, Senior Vice President of Lending. “We want these students to know that if they ever have questions about a financial decision, they can reach out to us for help.”

“We’re all about getting our students ready for careers, and a big part of that is making sure they’re successful after high school. That’s our goal. Being literate in personal finance is huge. We want to make sure they’re using their finances in the best way possible,” stated Nate Demar, Director of Cold Hollow Career Center.

“The financial reality fair is very connectable to daily life, especially the grocery thing. And everyone knows that kids are great, but they’re also expensive! If you’re going to do that, I recommend saving money. It takes a lot,” commented Azure Schuster, student at the Cold Hollow Career Center.

NorthCountry Federal Credit Union’s mission is “to make dreams come true for all by offering personalized financial solutions.” It is a not-for-profit financial cooperative, owned entirely by its accountholders.
