Hal Cohen, executive director of Vermont Adult Learning since June 2018, has announced his intention to retire at the end of December. While the organization's board of directors conducts a search for Cohen's successor, Associate Director David Justice and Program Director Joseph Przyperhart will serve as interim executive co-directors.
Cohen has dedicated more than four decades of his career to nonprofit leadership and antipoverty work, with the last 27 devoted to making a positive impact in Vermont. During his tenure at VAL, he ensured financial stability and pioneered advocacy efforts, resulting in the creation of a robust Vermont Adult Education and Literacy Network.
"Working at Vermont Adult Learning has been one of the highlights of my career,” Cohen said. “I've always believed that education is a ticket out of poverty, and I have been so moved by the stories and accomplishments of our adult students. VAL's important work will continue in the hands of a very talented and dedicated staff that I will miss!"
