David Cawley of Burlington, retired manager of Vermont Energy Investment Corp., has been named 2023 winner of the AARP Andrus Award for Community Service in Vermont. The award recognizes outstanding AARP volunteers and members who are making a powerful difference in their communities in ways that are consistent with AARP’s mission and vision and that inspire others to service.
“David is constantly striving to improve his Burlington neighborhood and build a sense of community,” said Kelly Stoddard Poor, associate state director of outreach at AARP Vermont. “He is always working to identify opportunities and create unique and valuable connections between his neighbors.”
Cawley, who has been volunteering with AARP Vermont for several years, has been integral in engaging neighbors and city officials with participation in community-led programs and demonstration projects to test needed change. He spearheaded the Old East End Neighborhood Coalition, which has been successful in getting pedestrian signals installed, advocating for a parking ban on Colchester Avenue and designated bike lanes on the street, a large beautification mural, year-round programming and more.
