AOT Road Construction Report Week of October 23

Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will have traffic impacts on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of October 23, 2023. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.

Interstates

I-89 Brookfield-Montpelier – Motorists can expect lane closures Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with uneven lanes and a grooved surface on the on- and off-ramps. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone.

I-89 Richmond – Motorists may encounter a single-lane closure for both southbound and northbound travel, between Monday and Friday, from 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The right shoulder in both the northbound and southbound lanes remain closed within project limits.

I-89 White River Junction – Our partners at NHDOT are working on a multi-year bridge replacement project on I-89 over the Connecticut River. Motorists should expect daily lane closures and speed limit reductions over the northbound and southbound bridges.

I-91 Bradford – There will be a nightly closure of I-91 South between Exits 17 and 16, as crews perform bridge repairs, on Wednesday, October 25, and Thursday, October 26, from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. During the closure there will be no through traffic, and the parking area on I-91 South between Exits 17 and 16 will be closed. Traffic will be detoured off I-91 South at Exit 17 to travel east along U.S. 302, then south on U.S. 5 in Wells River, and west on VT 25 in Bradford, before returning to I-91 South at Exit 16.

For daytime operations, and for the rest of the project area, the permanent, single-lane closures on I-91 in both directions near Exit 16 will continue. A full stop configuration has been implemented for traffic entering I-91 northbound from Exit 16. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in place through the work zones. The westbound shoulder of VT 25B/South Main Street under the work zone is closed.

I-91 Fairlee-St. Johnsbury – Permanent, single-lane closures have been implemented for multiple bridge maintenance work zones in Newbury on I-91 northbound near Exit 17 and

southbound between Exits 16 and 17, and in the southbound lanes in St. Johnsbury near Exit 20.The Exit 20 southbound on-ramp remains closed with a signed detour in place. In Fairlee, a full deck replacement over Lake Morey Road has necessitated a temporary crossover for northbound traffic at Exit 15. Lane width restrictions and speed limit reductions are currently in effect for all these work zones.

I-91 Lyndon-Barton – Travelers can expect grooved pavement, uneven lanes, and daily lane closures northbound and southbound in the work zones between Exits 23 and 25, from Monday to Friday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Speed is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone. 

I-91 Westminster  A bridge deck replacement project on I-91 over VT 121 is underway. A crossover is in effect with a speed limit reduction to 55 mph. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone. An alternating one-way traffic pattern regulated with temporary signals is in effect on VT 121 underneath the bridges.

I-91 Westminster-Springfield – A resurfacing project is underway along I-91 North between Westminster and Springfield. Motorists can expect a lane closure near the Exit 7 off-ramp.

Around the State

Barre City A roadway improvement project is underway at the intersection of VT 14/Maple Avenue and Merchant Street. Merchant Street will be closed to traffic between VT 14/Maple Avenue and Warren Street, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Wednesday. During the week, motorists can expect a single-lane closure with alternating one-way traffic at the VT 14/Maple Avenue and Merchant Street intersection.

Bennington-Pownal – Motorists may encounter lane closures with minor delays this week while crews work on bridge joint repairs and painting work on VT 279. Crews will also be adding gravel to shoulders along U.S. 7 from Bennington to the Massachusetts border. Motorists are advised to drive cautiously and to avoid driving over wet paint.

Berlin A bridge replacement project continues along U.S. 302. Motorists can expect intermittent short stoppages on either side of the bridge to allow construction vehicles to safely move through the work zone. 

Brattleboro-Newfane – A resurfacing project is underway along VT 30. Motorists can expect several traffic control packages with alternating one-way traffic between Brattleboro and Newfane. Motorists can anticipate delays and are advised to follow the posted speed limit which has been reduced to 40 mph throughout the project area.

Burlington  A roadway project along Shelburne Road and Shelburne Street, U.S. 7/South Willard Street (to the intersection with U.S. 2), and Alternate U.S. 7 (North/South Winooski Avenue, St. Paul Street) to the intersection with Riverside Avenue is nearing completion. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Parking restrictions and lane closures may be required at various locations in the work area. 

Charlotte-South Burlington – A roadway resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 7 from Shelburne to South Burlington. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Motorists should expect single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic during nighttime operations. 

Colchester – A roadway improvement project along the U.S. 2/7 corridor at I-89 Exit 16 will cause a single-lane closure along U.S. 2/7 between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. this week. Utility work will take place under the closure of the outermost northbound travel lane along U.S. 2/7.

Hartford – Motorists can expect periodic lane closures along VT 14 northbound as crews receive large deliveries of materials and begin structural steel installation this week. 

Hartland The Hartland 3 Corners intersection project continues this week with crews completing final cleanup activities. Motorists are advised to slow down and remain alert when traveling through the work area. 

Killington – A bridge replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 east of the Skyeship Gondola. Motorists will continue to use the temporary bridge located just upstream of the existing bridge. Motorists can expect intermittent single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers. Drivers should be aware that sections of the roadway within the work zone will be a gravel surface.

A culvert replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 at Spring Hill Road. Traffic will continue to be shifted to the south side of U.S. 4 within the project limits. Motorists can expect intermittent single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers. Once line striping work is completed, traffic patterns along U.S. 4 will return to its normal layout. Drivers are encouraged to use caution and slow down while traveling through the work area. 

Marshfield-Danville – A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2. Motorists can expect lane closures and alternating one-way traffic in Marshfield. 

Montpelier A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2 and U.S. 302. Motorists can expect single-lane closures and alternating one-way traffic, from Sunday, October 22, through Thursday, October 26, between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. During daytime operations Monday through Friday, motorists can expect single-lane closures and alternating one-way traffic. 

New Haven – Work continues on VT 17 near East Street and Sawyer Road. Motorists can expect periods of alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. this week. 

North Hero – A bridge deck replacement project is underway on the Mother’s Bridge on U.S. 2 over Lake Champlain between North Hero and Alburgh. A lane closure is in effect regulated by temporary signals and motorists should expect brief delays with stopped traffic at times throughout the week. A lane width restriction (12-foot travel lane) is in place. 

Plymouth – A bridge deck replacement project continues along VT 100, 1.5 miles south of the intersection of VT 100 and VT 100A. Motorists should remain alert for lane closures and minor traffic delays as the project nears completion. 

Poultney – A bridge replacement project is ongoing at the intersection of Thrall Road and River Street where the yield to alternating traffic pattern remains in place. Construction traffic, including concrete trucks, to both abutments will continue this week.

Richmond – The replacement of Bridge #29 along U.S. 2 over I-89 continues this week. Drivers may encounter periodic lane closures with traffic control present to allow for one lane of alternating travel.

Richmond-Bolton – A roadway resurfacing project continues along U.S. 2. Motorists can expect moderate delays with traffic control present to allow for one-lane of alternating traffic within various work areas during daytime and nighttime hours this week. 

Royalton – Construction for the VT 14 railroad bridge replacement and roadway realignment project will resume on Monday, October 23. Traffic is currently reduced to one lane with temporary traffic signals. Motorists should be aware of the 12’1” overpass clearance. 

Thetford – NHDOT is leading a rehabilitation of the East Thetford-Lyme Bridge along VT 113. While the bridge is closed for construction, there are two signed detour routes in place along I-91 connecting Fairlee, VT and Orford, NH in the north, and Norwich, VT and Hanover, NH in the south. 

Williston – The reconstruction of the intersection of U.S. 2 and Industrial Avenue continues this week. Motorists may encounter lane shifts and minor delays within the various work areas during daytime work hours. 

Wilmington-Brattleboro – Motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic along VT 9 as crews complete culvert flushing. Flaggers will be in place to assist motorists through the work zone. 

Winooski  A roadway project continues along East Allen St./VT 15. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. Work on the railroad crossing located on VT 15 near Spring Street has begun. Lane closures and flagged traffic will be required with minor delays expected this week.
