AOT Road Construction Report Week of August 28

Vermont Agency of Transportation This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will have traffic impacts on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the Week of August 28. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.   

Interstates   

I-89 Brookfield-Montpelier – Motorists can expect daily lane closures Monday through Friday and a grooved traveling surface with uneven lanes. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone.  

I-89 Richmond – The southbound and northbound high-speed lanes will be closed Monday through Thursday from 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday from 5:30 a.m. to noon. The right shoulder remains closed within project limits. 

I-89 White River Junction – Our partners at NHDOT are working on a multi-year bridge replacement project on I-89 over the Connecticut River. Motorists should expect daily lane closures and speed reductions over the northbound and southbound bridges.  

I-91 Barton-Derby – A paving project is finishing up on I-91 from Exit 25 in Barton to Exit 27 in Derby. Single-lane closures will be in place in both directions Monday through Friday with a speed limit reduction to 55 mph. 

I-91 Bradford – Permanent, single-lane closures have been established on I-91 in both directions near Exit 16 while crews work on maintenance repairs to multiple bridges. A full stop configuration has been implemented for traffic entering I-91 northbound from Exit 16. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in place through the work zones. The westbound shoulder of VT 25B/South Main Street under the work zone is closed. 

I-91 Fairlee-St. Johnsbury – Permanent, single-lane closures have been implemented for multiple bridge maintenance work zones in Newbury on I-91 northbound near Exit 17 and southbound between Exits 16 and 17, and in the southbound lanes in St. Johnsbury near Exit 20. The Exit 20 southbound on ramp remains closed with a signed detour in place. In Fairlee, a full deck replacement over Lake Morey Road has necessitated a temporary crossover for northbound traffic at Exit 15. Lane width and speed limit reductions are currently in effect for all these work zones. 

I-91 Lyndon-Barton – Travelers can expect grooved pavement, uneven lanes, and daily lane closures northbound and southbound in the work zones between Exits 23 and 25 from Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Speed is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone. 

I-91 Westminster A bridge deck replacement project on I-91 over Vermont Route 121 is underway. A crossover is in effect with a speed reduction to 55 mph. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone. An alternating one-way traffic pattern regulated with temporary signals is in effect on VT 121 underneath the bridges. 

I-91 Westminster-Springfield – A resurfacing project is underway along I-91 North between Westminster and Springfield. Motorists can expect multiple traffic control packages with shoulder and lane closures including on the high-speed lane on I-91 North between Exit 5 and Exit 8. 

Around the State   

Barre City – A roadway improvement project is underway at the intersection of VT 14/Maple Avenue and Merchant Street. Beginning Monday, August 28 at 6 a.m., Merchant Street between VT 14/Maple Avenue and Warren Street will be closed to traffic. The road closure will be in effect until Friday, September 15. Motorists can expect short to moderate delays on VT 14/Maple Avenue with a single-lane closure with alternating one-way traffic. 

Barre Town – A bridge replacement project is underway in Barre Town for Bridge #21 over Jail Branch. Bridge #21 and VT 110 between Old Route 302 and the Waterman/Websterville intersection remain closed to traffic. Motorists can expect minimal traffic impacts. 

Bennington-Pownal Bridge repairs are expected on VT-279 near the New York border and eastbound near Route 9. Crews will also add shoulder gravel and rumble strips. Paving on U.S. 7 is ongoing and should be completed by the end of the week. Expect slight delays. 

Berlin A bridge replacement project continues along U.S. 302. Motorists can expect intermittent short stoppages on either side of the bridge to allow for crane movements over the roadway and for construction vehicles to pass. 

Brattleboro-Hinsdale – The VT 142 closure period has been extended to Friday, September 8, 2023. VT 142 is closed from the intersection with Royal Road to 28 Vernon Street for roadway approach work for a bridge project. Separate signed detours for cars and trucks remain active. 

Brattleboro-Newfane – A resurfacing project is underway along VT 30. Motorists can expect moderate delays and multiple traffic control packages with alternating one-way traffic on VT 30 between Brattleboro and Newfane. Motorists should exercise caution driving through the project limits as there are varying roadway surfaces, including gravel. Speed limits throughout the project area have been reduced to 40 mph. 

Burlington A roadway project continues along Shelburne Road and Shelburne Street, U.S. 7/South Willard Street (to the intersection with U.S. Route 2), and Alternate U.S. 7 (North/South Winooski Ave, St. Paul St.) to the intersection with Riverside Ave. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Flagged traffic may be required at various locations. Minor to no delays anticipated. 

Charlotte-So. Burlington A roadway resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 7 from Shelburne to South Burlington. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Flagged, alternating traffic will be required in the vicinity of active operations. Delays may occur, particularly in the evening hours. 

Chester – A culvert replacement project is underway along VT 10 just east of its intersection with VT 103. Travelers should expect short delays with one-way alternating traffic controlled by temporary signals.  

Colchester – A roadway improvement project along the U.S. 2/7 corridor at I-89 Exit 16 will cause lane closures along U.S. 2/7 between Mountain View Drive and South Park Drive. Between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., at least one travel lane will remain open in each direction. Between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m., a single travel lane may be closed in each direction. A portion of Mountain View Drive at its intersection with U.S. 2/7 will have lane reductions.   

Hartford – A bridge replacement project is underway in Hartford on Bridge #7 on the VA Cutoff Road. A 60-day planned closure of VT 14 between Ferry Crossing Road and Christian Street is planned to reopen to vehicular traffic on Thursday, August 31. 

Hartland The Hartland 3 Corners intersection reconfiguration project continues with the contractor completing sidewalk curbing. Motorists should expect flagged traffic at the U.S. 5/VT 12/Quechee Road intersection for concrete sidewalk pouring through the following week. 

Killington – A bridge replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 east of the Skyeship Gondola. The U.S. 4 Bridge #33 over the Ottauquechee River remains closed, with traffic continuing to use the temporary bridge located just upstream of the existing bridge. Mission Farm Road remains closed at its intersection with U.S. 4. Motorists should expect potential intermittent short stoppages along U.S. 4 near the existing bridge.    

A culvert replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 at Spring Hill Road. The phase one detour is open, with traffic shifting to the south side of U.S. 4. The phase one detour is narrow with added curvature to its alignment and motorists are encouraged to reduce their speed throughout the work zone. Motorists should expect potential intermittent short stoppages along U.S. 4 near Spring Hill Road.   

Ludlow – A bridge replacement project is underway along VT 100, 3.4 miles north of the intersection with VT 103. The bridge will be closed from Tuesday, August 29 at 6 a.m. to Thursday, August 31 at 8 p.m. A regional detour is in place via VT 103, U.S. 7/Main Street in Rutland, and U.S. 4. Intermittent lane closures will occur on Monday and Friday. Motorists are advised to travel with caution. 

Marshfield-Danville – A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2. Motorists can expect multiple traffic control packages along U.S. 2 with lane closures and alternating one-way traffic in Marshfield. Motorists are advised to follow the posted speed limit and travel with caution as areas of the roadway are scarified and have a gravel surface with no markings indicating the centerline and edge line. 

Montpelier A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2 and U.S. 302. Motorists can expect lane closures and alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 302 from the project limits at the Berlin/Montpelier town line to the intersection with U.S. 2 at the roundabout, and along U.S. 2 throughout the entire length of the project, beginning at the Middlesex/Montpelier town line and continuing on U.S. 2 to the eastern end of the project limits, near the Berlin/Montpelier town line. 

New Haven – Traffic on VT 17 near East Street and Sawyer Road in New Haven will be controlled temporary traffic signals on the west end of the project area. Minor delays and rough road conditions can be expected. 

North Hero – A deck replacement project is underway on the Mother's Bridge on U.S. 2 over Lake Champlain between North Hero Island and Alburgh. A lane closure is in effect regulated by temporary signals. In addition to signals, vehicular traffic through the bridge site should expect periods of stopped traffic of up to 10 min at a time throughout the week resulting in moderate delays. A width restriction (12-foot travel lane) is in place. 

Poultney  A bridge replacement project is ongoing at the intersection of Thrall Road and River Street where the yield to alternating traffic pattern remains in place. Construction traffic to both abutments continues. 

Plymouth – A bridge deck replacement project is underway along VT 100 1.5 miles south of the intersection of VT 100 and VT 100A. A speed limit reduction to 40 mph is in effect with an alternating one-way traffic pattern regulated by temporary signals. Motorists can expect minor delays through the work zone.  

Quechee Gorge Bridge – After August 28th, the paint contractor will install scaffolding under the bridge. Lane closures, with flaggers from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., will begin in the coming weeks. 

Richmond – Replacement of Bridge #29 along U.S. 2 over I-89. Travelers may encounter periodic lane closures with traffic control present allowing for one lane of alternating travel.     

Richmond-Bolton – Rehabilitation of U.S. 2 continues. Motorists can expect delays within work areas due to one-way alternating traffic, Monday through Friday for daytime and nighttime work operations. Motorists can also expect some areas of gravel surface between Willis Farm Road and the I-89 interchange, and between Kenyon Road to the Richmond/Williston town line. Please slow down. 

Royalton – Construction for the VT 14 railroad bridge replacement and roadway realignment is ongoing. Traffic is currently reduced to one lane with temporary traffic signals. Motorists should be aware of the 12’1” overpass clearance and follow signage.  

Stowe-Cambridge An environmental restoration/parking area and stormwater improvement project is underway along Scenic VT 108 “The Notch” between Stowe and Cambridge. Motorists may encounter periods of one-way alternating traffic as work continues at areas between the former Long Trail and Notch Proper South Parking Areas.

NOTE: Tractor trailers are prohibited from the “The Notch” road. 

Thetford – NHDOT is leading a rehabilitation of the East Thetford-Lyme Bridge along VT 113. While the bridge is closed for construction, there are two signed detour routes in place along I-91 connecting Fairlee, VT and Orford, NH in the north, and Norwich, VT and Hanover, NH in the south.  

Williston - Flaggers will be present allowing for construction vehicles to travel in and out of the work areas with minimal impact to motorists. Possible lane shifts within the work area to allow for equipment operations. 

Williston Park and Ride – Construction of a new park and ride facility along VT 2A continues. One-way alternating traffic will be required on VT 2A from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Moderate delays are expected throughout the week. 

Wilmington-Brattleboro – A resurfacing project is underway on VT 9. Motorists can expect minimal traffic delays and alternating one-way traffic along VT 9 as crews conduct punch list work and cleanup activities. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
