Traffic Advisory Saturday: US Routes 2 and 7 over the Burlington-Winooski bridge

WHEN:    Saturday, August 19, 2023

WHERE:  U.S. Routes 2 and 7 over the Burlington-Winooski Bridge

WHAT:    Intermittent short-term bridge closures

The Vermont Agency of Transportation will conduct aerial survey activities over the Burlington-Winooski Bridge, which carries US Routes 2 and 7 (Main Street in Winooski to the north and Riverside Avenue in Burlington to the south) over the Winooski River between the cities of Burlington and Winooski.

The survey activities will be completed using a helicopter flying at low altitude on Saturday, August 19, 2023, weather-dependent. The rain date is planned for Sunday, August 20, 2023. The survey flights are expected to require two brief closures of the bridge for 10-15 minutes for all users for safety reasons.

Traffic control measures will be provided at and near the bridge during the closures.

The 95-year-old existing bridge has narrow vehicle travel lanes, no shoulders, narrow sidewalks, and more than 25,000 vehicle crossings per day. There is currently no buffer separating vehicular traffic from pedestrians and bicyclists, creating unsafe conditions for travelers.

Replacement of the existing structure is in the preliminary engineering phase, with construction of the new bridge with intersection improvements in Burlington, anticipated to begin in 2027.
