AOT Road Construction Report, Week of August 14

VermontBiz This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will have traffic impacts on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont. Some projects are not included in the report this week as they have been temporarily suspended due to flood damage, the work site is inaccessible, or the contractors were repositioned to assist AOT with emergency response and repairs. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it. 

 

Interstates 

I-89 Brookfield-Montpelier – Motorists can expect lane closures Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and a grooved traveling surface with uneven lanes. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph from MM 36.60 to Exit 8.

 

I-89 Richmond – Southbound and northbound high-speed lanes will be closed Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the right shoulder will remain closed within the vicinity of the project area below the interstate. 

 

I-89 Sharon – The Sharon Welcome Center on I-89 northbound will be closed from August 122, 2023, for parking lot paving and facility maintenance. There will be no public access to the facility or parking area, and the building will remain closed during this period. The Welcome Center will reopen on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at 7 a.m.  

 

I-89 White River Junction – Our partners at NHDOT are working on a multi-year bridge replacement project on I-89 over the Connecticut River. Motorists should expect daily lane closures and speed reductions over the northbound and southbound bridges.  

 

I-91 Barton-Derby A speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in effect through daily, single-lane closures in both directions on I-91 from Exit 25 in Barton to Exit 27 in Derby, as a paving project continues. Additional traffic control measures will be in place at Exit 26 as needed to facilitate new pavement marking work to the on- and off-ramps. 

 

I-91 Bradford – Permanent single-lane closures have been established in the I-91 northbound lanes near Exit 16 while crews work on preventative maintenance repairs to multiple bridges. A full-stop configuration has been implemented for traffic entering I-91 northbound from Exit 16. Southbound permanent lane closures in this area will remain and a speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in place through the work zones.  

 

I-91 Fairlee-St. Johnsbury – Permanent single-lane closures have been implemented for multiple bridge maintenance work zones in Newbury on I-91 northbound near Exit 17 and southbound between Exits 16 and Exit 17, and in the southbound lanes in St. Johnsbury near Exit 20. The Exit 20 southbound on-ramp remains closed with a signed detour in place. In Fairlee, a full deck replacement over Lake Morey Road has necessitated a temporary crossover for northbound traffic at Exit 15. Lane width and speed limit reductions are currently in effect for all these work zones.  

 

I-91 Lyndon-Barton – Motorists can expect grooved pavement, uneven lanes, and daily lane closures northbound and southbound in the vicinity of active construction between Exits 23 and 25, from Monday to Friday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Speed is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone. 

 

I-91 Westminster  A bridge deck replacement project on I-91 over VT 121 is underway. A crossover is in effect with a speed reduction to 55 mph, and fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone. VT 121 will be closed to through-traffic on Wednesday, August 16, from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the location of the interstate bridges. The detour route will utilize U.S. 5, the I-91 Access Road, and Back Westminster Road.   

 

I-91 Westminster-Springfield – A resurfacing project is underway along I-91 North between Westminster and Springfield. The work will occur on Saturday, August 12, and Monday, August 14, through Friday, August 18.  Motorists can expect multiple traffic control packages with lane closures between Exit 5 and Exit 8. 

 

 

Around the State  

Barre City A roadway improvement project is underway at the intersection of VT 14/Maple Avenue and Merchant Street. Motorists can expect short to moderate delays with a single-lane closure with alternating one-way traffic. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. 

 

Barre Town – A bridge replacement project is underway on Bridge #21 over Jail Branch where motorists can expect minimal traffic impacts. Bridge #21 and VT 110 between Old Route 302 and the Waterman/Websterville intersection remain closed to traffic.

 

Bennington-Pownal  VT 279 is scheduled for cleanup and shoulder work this week. On U.S. 7, ongoing work includes shoulder and ditch improvements near the Massachusetts-Vermont border, along with pothole repairs, driveway apron fixes, and guard rail repairs. Motorists can expect flaggers, lane closures, and delays throughout the work zone.

 

Brattleboro-Hinsdale – VT 142 remains closed from the intersection with Royal Road to 28 Vernon Street for roadway approach work for a bridge project. Separate signed detours for cars and trucks remain active. Local traffic should watch for concrete trucks entering and exiting the work zone this week. 

 

Brattleboro-Newfane A resurfacing project is underway along VT 30 where motorists will encounter multiple traffic control packages with alternating one-way traffic between Brattleboro and Newfane. Motorists should exercise caution when driving through the work zone as the speed limit has been reduced to 40 mph and there are varying roadway surfaces, including gravel.

 

Berlin A bridge replacement project continues along U.S. 302. Motorists can expect minimal impacts and a single-lane closure with alternating one-way traffic. Speed advisory signs of 25 mph are in place for the traffic lane shift and flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.

 

Burlington  A roadway project continues along Shelburne Road and Shelburne Street, U.S. 7/South Willard Street (to the intersection with U.S. 2), and Alternate U.S. 7 (North/South Winooski Avenue, St. Paul Street.) to the intersection with Riverside Avenue. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday, August 13, through Thursday, August 17, and motorists should expect delays in the vicinity of active operations. Parking restrictions may be in effect throughout the week on various portions of the project.  

 

Charlotte-So. Burlington – A roadway resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 7 from Shelburne to South Burlington. Nighttime work hours are 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday, August 13, through Thursday, August 17. Flagged and alternating traffic will be required in the vicinity of active operations and motorists may encounter delays, particularly in the evening hours.

 

Chester – A culvert replacement project is underway along VT 10 just east of its intersection with VT 103. Travelers should expect short delays with one-way alternating traffic controlled by temporary signals.  

 

Colchester – Construction continues on the Exit 16 Diverging Diamond Interchange located along U.S 2/7. During daytime hours, motorists should expect single-lane closures between the hours of 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., with up to one travel lane closed in a single direction. During nighttime hours, motorists should expect lane closures between the hours of 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., with at least one travel lane remaining open in each direction.   

 

Hartford – A bridge replacement project is underway in Hartford on Bridge #7 on the VA Cutoff Road. A 60-day planned closure of VT 14 between Ferry Crossing Road and Christian Street is now in place, and a signed detour can be found at the VA Cut Off Road, Mill Road, U.S. 4/5, and VT 14. Bike and pedestrian access will be maintained on VT 14 during the work.

 

Hartland The Hartland 3 Corners intersection reconfiguration project continues while the contractor is preparing the edges of roadways for curb installation. Motorists should expect flagged traffic at the U.S. 5/VT 12/Quechee Road intersection for existing pavement milling through the following week.  

 

Killington – A bridge replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 just east of the Skyeship Gondola. The U.S. 4 Bridge #33 over the Ottauquechee River will remain closed and traffic will continue to use the temporary bridge located just upstream of the existing bridge. Mission Farm Road remains closed at its eastern intersection with U.S. 4. Motorists should expect potential intermittent short stoppages along U.S. 4 near the existing bridge.     

 

A culvert replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 at Spring Hill Road just east of West Hill Road. Traffic will continue to be shifted to the south side of U.S. 4, the opposite side of Spring Hill Road. Motorists should reduce speed throughout the work zone and follow all signed speed limits. 

 

Marshfield-Danville – A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2. with lane closures and alternating one-way traffic between Plainfield and Marshfield. Flaggers and Uniformed Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. Motorists are advised to follow the posted speed limit and travel with caution as areas of the roadway are scarified and have a gravel surface with no markings indicating the centerline and edge line. 

 

Montpelier A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2 and U.S. 302. Motorists can expect lane closures and alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 302 from the project limits at the Berlin/Montpelier town line to the intersection with U.S. 2 at the roundabout, and along U.S. 2 beginning at Berlin Street and continuing to the eastern end of the project limits, near the Berlin/Montpelier town line. 

 

New Haven – Traffic will continue to be controlled by two temporary traffic signals on VT 17 near East Street and Sawyer Road, allowing for alternating one-way traffic 24-hours per day until the work is complete. 

 

North Hero – A deck replacement project is underway on the Mother's Bridge on U.S. 2 over Lake Champlain between North Hero and Alburgh. A lane closure is in effect regulated by temporary signals and motorists should expect delays and periods of stopped traffic. A width restriction (12-foot travel lane) is also in place through the work zone.

 

Plymouth – A bridge deck replacement project is underway along VT 100 1.5 miles south of the intersection of VT 100 and VT 100A. A speed limit reduction to 40 mph is in effect with an alternating one-way traffic pattern regulated by temporary signals. Motorists can expect minor delays through the work zone.  

 

Poultney  Motorists should exercise caution at the intersection of Thrall Road and River Street where flaggers will continue to be utilized as needed on the south side of the bridge to aid traffic through the work zone. Construction traffic can be expected at both abutments while crews work to replace the bridge.

 

Richmond – Crews will continue working on the replacement of Bridge #29 along U.S. 2 over I-89. Travelers can expect lane closures with traffic control and one lane of alternating travel.  
 

Richmond-Bolton – The rehabilitation of U.S. 2 continues, and motorists can expect delays within work areas due to one-way alternating traffic, Monday through Friday 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Motorists are encouraged to reduce their speed and expect to be traveling over areas of gravel surface between The Crate Escape and the I-89 interchange.

 

Royalton – Construction for the VT 14 railroad bridge replacement and roadway realignment continue. Traffic is currently reduced to one lane with the use of temporary traffic signals. Motorists are advised to be aware of the 12’-1” overpass clearance and follow signage.    

 

Stowe-Cambridge An environmental restoration/parking area and stormwater improvement project is underway along Scenic VT 108 “The Notch” between Stowe and Cambridge. Motorists may encounter periods of one-way alternating traffic as work continues at areas between the former Long Trail and Hell Brook North Parking Areas. NOTE: Tractor trailers are prohibited from the “The Notch” road.     

  

Thetford – NHDOT is leading a rehabilitation of the East Thetford-Lyme Bridge along VT 113. While the bridge is closed for construction, there are two signed detour routes in place along I-91 connecting Fairlee, VT and Orford, NH in the north, and Norwich, VT and Hanover, NH in the south.  

 

Westminster  VT 121 will be closed to through-traffic on Wednesday, August 16, from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the interstate bridges. The detour route will utilize U.S. 5, the I-91 Access Road, and Back Westminster Road.  

 

Williston  Expect a long-term lane shift on U.S. 2 between Gregory Drive in South Burlington and Adams Court in Williston. Flaggers will be present to assist construction vehicles in and out of the work areas with minimal impacts to traffic. Motorists should be ready for possible lane shifts within the work area to allow for equipment operations. 

 

Williston Park and Ride – The construction of a new park-and-ride facility along VT 2A continues. One-way alternating traffic will be required on VT 2A between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and drivers are asked to use caution and to expect delays when traveling through the project area.

 

Wilmington-Brattleboro – A resurfacing project is underway on VT 9. Flaggers will be present to assist traffic and motorists can expect minimal delays and alternating one-way traffic as crews conduct punch list work and cleanup activities.
