Vermont Business Magazine This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will have traffic impacts on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the Week of August 7. Some projects are not included in the report this week as they have been temporarily suspended due to flood damage, the work site is inaccessible, or the contractors were repositioned to assist AOT with emergency response and repairs. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.
Interstates
I-89 Brookfield-Montpelier – Motorists can expect lane closures Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and a grooved traveling surface with uneven lanes. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph from MM 36.60 to Exit 8. There will be overnight closures at Exit 7 on Sunday 8/13. The Exit 7 off ramp will be closed at 7:00 p.m. until work is complete. Traffic will follow a signed detour to Exit 9 and back onto I-89 southbound to Exit 7. The Exit 7 on ramp will be closed at 10:00 p.m. on Sunday 8/13 until work is complete. Traffic will follow a signed detour to I-89 southbound to Exit 5 and back onto I-89 northbound. Both Exit 7 ramps are expected to be reopened by 6:00 a.m. on Monday 8/14.
I-89 Richmond – Monday through Friday the southbound and northbound passing lanes will be closed from 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The right shoulder remains closed within the vicinity of the project area below the interstate.
I-89 Sharon – The Sharon Welcome Center on I-89 northbound will be closed from August 1-22, 2023, for parking lot paving and facility maintenance. There will be no public access to the facility or parking, and the building will remain closed during this period. The Welcome Center will reopen on Wednesday, August 23rd, 2023, at 7 a.m.
I-89 White River Junction – Our partners at NHDOT are working on a multi-year bridge replacement project on I-89 over the Connecticut River. Motorists should expect daily lane closures and speed reductions over the northbound and southbound bridges.
I-91 Barton-Derby – A speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in effect through daily, single lane closures for multiple work zones in both directions on I-91 from Exit 25 in Barton to Exit 27 in Derby.
I-91 Bradford – Motorists are advised that new permanent, single-lane closures have been established in the I-91 northbound lanes near Exit 16. A full stop configuration has been implemented for traffic entering I-91 northbound from Exit 16. Southbound permanent lane closures in this area will remain as configured for the time being. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in place through the work zones.
I-91 Fairlee-St. Johnsbury – Permanent, single-lane closures have been implemented on I-91 northbound near Exit 17 and southbound between Exits 16 and 17 in Newbury, and in the southbound lanes near Exit 20 in St. Johnsbury. The Exit 20 southbound on ramp remains closed with a signed detour in place. A temporary crossover remains in place for northbound traffic at Exit 15 in Fairlee as a full deck replacement is completed on the northbound bridge over Lake Morey Road. Lane width and speed limit reductions are currently in effect for all these work zones.
I-91 Lyndon – Barton –Travelers can expect grooved pavement, uneven lanes, and daily lane closures (both northbound and southbound) in the vicinity of active construction between Exits 23 and 25 from Monday to Friday during daytime construction hours (6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). Speed is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone.
I-91 Westminster – A bridge deck replacement project on I-91 over Vermont Route 121 is underway. A crossover is in effect at the location of the bridges. Southbound traffic has been diverted onto the northbound barrel. Northbound traffic is limited to the right-hand lane of travel on I-91 North. A speed reduction of 55 mph is in place on I-91 within the project area. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone. VT 121 will be closed to through-traffic on Friday, August 11, 2023, from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the location of the interstate bridges. The detour route will utilize U.S. Route 5, the I-91 Access Road, and Back Westminster Road.
I-91 Westminster-Springfield – A resurfacing project is underway along I-91 North between Westminster and Springfield. Saturday, August 5, and Monday, August 7, through Friday, August 11, motorists can expect lane closures on I-91 North between Exit 5 and Exit 8.
Around the State
Barre City – A roadway improvement project is underway at the intersection of VT 14/Maple Avenue and Merchant Street. On Monday 8/7 from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the end of Merchant Street near the intersection with VT 14/Maple Avenue will be closed to traffic. Throughout the week, motorists can expect short to moderate delays on VT 14/Maple Avenue with a single-lane closure with alternating one-way traffic. Flaggers and temporary traffic signals will be in place.
Barre Town – A bridge replacement project is underway in Barre Town for Bridge #21 over Jail Branch. Bridge #21 and VT 110 between Old Route 302 and the Waterman/Websterville intersection remains closed to traffic. Traffic may be reduced to one lane with alternating one-way traffic at the intersection of Old Route 302 and VT 110. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
Bennington-Pownal – Repairs to shoulder drainage structures will continue on VT 279. Paving along the VT 279 and U.S. Route 7 interchange will focus on exit ramp completion. Ongoing work to U.S. 7 will involve shoulder, ditch, and guard rail improvements near the Massachusetts/Vermont border. Motorists should exercise caution, expect flaggers, lane closures, and delays.
Berlin – A bridge replacement project continues along U.S. 302 with minimal traffic impacts. A single-lane closure with alternating one-way traffic along U.S. 302 may be utilized. Speed advisory signs of 25 mph are in place for the traffic lane shift. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone as needed.
Brattleboro-Hinsdale – VT 142 remains closed from the intersection with Royal Road to 28 Vernon Street for roadway approach work for a bridge project. Separate signed detours for cars and trucks remain active. Local traffic should watch for concrete trucks entering and exiting the work zone this week, especially at the north end.
Brattleboro-Newfane – A resurfacing project is underway along VT 30. Motorists can expect moderate delays and traffic control with alternating one-way traffic on VT 30 between Brattleboro and Newfane. Motorists should exercise caution as there are varying roadway surfaces, including gravel. Speed limits in the project area are reduced to 40 mph.
Burlington – A roadway project continues along Shelburne Road and Shelburne Street, U.S. Route 7/South Willard Street (to the intersection with U.S. Route 2), and Alternate U.S. Route 7 (North/South Winooski Ave, St. Paul St.) to the intersection with Riverside Ave. Nighttime work hours are 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Minor delays may occur in the vicinity of active operations. Parking restrictions may be in effect throughout the week on various portions of the project. Please observe all posted parking restrictions. Vehicles will be towed at the owner's expense.
Charlotte-So. Burlington – A roadway resurfacing project is underway along U.S. Route 7 from Shelburne to South Burlington. Nighttime work hours are 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Flaggers and alternating traffic will be required in the vicinity of active operations. Delays may occur, particularly in the evening hours. Please be aware of raised structures within the southbound lanes of Shelburne Road between Swift Street and Webster Road.
Chester – A culvert replacement project is underway along VT 10 just east of its intersection with VT 103. Travelers should expect short delays with one-way alternating traffic controlled by temporary signals.
Colchester – Construction continues on the Exit 16 Diverging Diamond Interchange located along U.S 2/7. During daytime hours, motorists should expect single-lane closures along U.S. 2/7 between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. with up to one travel lane closed in a single direction. During nighttime hours, motorists should expect lane closures between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. along U.S. 2/7 with at least one travel lane remaining open in each direction.
Hartford – A bridge replacement project is underway in Hartford on Bridge #7 on the VA Cutoff Road. A 60-day planned closure of VT 14 between Ferry Crossing Road and Christian Street is now in place. A signed detour is in place along the VA Cut Off Road, Mill Road, U.S. 4/5, and VT 14. Bike and pedestrian access are being maintained on VT 14.
Hartland – The Hartland 3 Corners intersection reconfiguration project continues. The contractor is preparing the edges of roadways for curb installation. Motorists should expect flagged traffic at the U.S. 5/VT 12/Quechee Road intersection for existing pavement milling through the following week.
Killington – A bridge replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 just east of the Skyeship Gondola. The U.S. 4 Bridge #33 over the Ottauquechee River will remain closed and traffic will continue to use the temporary bridge located just upstream of the existing bridge. Mission Farm Road remains closed at its eastern intersection with U.S. 4. Motorists should expect potential intermittent short stoppages along U.S. 4 near the existing bridge.
A culvert replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 at Spring Hill Road just east of West Hill Road. Spring Hill Road will be reduced to a single lane with alternating one-way traffic just north of its intersection with U.S. 4 during daytime hours. Traffic will continue to be shifted to the south side of U.S. 4, opposite side of Spring Hill Road. Motorists should reduce speed throughout the work zone and follow all signed speed limits.
Marshfield-Danville – A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2. Motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 2 in Marshfield. Flaggers and Uniform Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. Motorists are advised to follow the posted speed limit and travel with caution as areas of the roadway are scarified and have a gravel surface with no markings indicating the centerline and edge line.
Montpelier – A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2 and U.S. 302. Beginning the night of Monday, August 7, and continuing until nighttime activities are complete, possibly through Friday, August 11, between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., motorists can expect lane closures and alternating one-way traffic along U.S. 2 beginning at the eastern end of the project and continuing along U.S. 2 to the western end of the project near Baily Avenue. During daytime hours, motorists can expect lane closures and alternating one-way traffic throughout the project limits.
Morgan – A culvert replacement project is nearing completion on Vermont Route 111 southeast of Seymour Lake. VT 111 has been reopened between Bear Mountain Road and Whitehill Loop Road. Expect one-way alternating traffic at the location of the culvert throughout the week. Minor delays may occur.
New Haven – Sawyer Rd and East Street will revert to being stop sign controlled intersections with VT-17. The temporary traffic signals will be removed. Motorists can expect a scarified pavement surface at the east and west ends of the project on VT-17. Some short sections of the road may temporarily be a gravel surface, and motorists are asked to slow down and drive with caution through the work area.
North Hero – A deck replacement project is underway on the Mother's Bridge on U.S. Route 2 over Lake Champlain between North Hero Island and Alburgh. A lane closure is in effect regulated by temporary signals and will be in place throughout the summer and fall. In addition to signals, vehicular traffic through the bridge site should expect periods of stopped traffic throughout the week. A width restriction (12-foot travel lane) is in place. Delays should be anticipated.
Plymouth – A bridge deck replacement project is underway along VT 100 1.5 miles south of the intersection of VT 100 and VT 100A. A speed limit reduction to 40 mph is in effect with an alternating one-way traffic pattern regulated by temporary signals. Motorists can expect minor delays through the work zone.
Poultney – Work trucks will continue to access both abutments and flaggers will be utilized as needed at the intersection of Thrall Road and River Street where a yield to one-way alternating traffic pattern remains in place through the work zone while the bridge is undergoing replacement.
Quechee – Work is set to start this month, but the contractor is awaiting the notice to proceed. Construction materials are in the northwest parking area. The contractor's traffic control plan, once approved, will eventually reduce US-4 to one lane of alternating traffic. Regular construction updates will be posted on the project website.
Richmond – Replacement of Bridge #29 along U.S. 2 over I-89. Travelers can expect lane closures with traffic control present allowing for one lane of alternating travel.
Richmond-Bolton – Rehabilitation of U.S. 2 continues. Motorists can expect delays within work areas due to one-way alternating traffic, Monday through Friday 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Motorists can also expect to be traveling on some areas of gravel surface between Millet Street and the I-89 interchange. Please slow down.
Royalton – Construction efforts for the VT 14 railroad bridge replacement and roadway realignment continue. Traffic is currently reduced to one lane with the use of temporary traffic signals. Please be aware of the 12’-1” overpass clearance and follow signage.
Stowe-Cambridge – An environmental restoration/parking area and stormwater improvement project is underway along Scenic VT 108 “The Notch” between Stowe and Cambridge. Motorists may encounter periods of one-way alternating traffic along this route as work continues at areas between the former Long Trail and Hell Brook North Parking Areas. Please note, tractor trailers are prohibited from the “The Notch” road.
Thetford – NHDOT is leading a rehabilitation of the East Thetford-Lyme Bridge along VT 113. The bridge is closed for construction. Two signed detour routes are in place along I-91 connecting Fairlee, VT and Orford, NH in the north, and Norwich, VT and Hanover, NH in the south.
Westminster – Vermont Route 121 will be closed to through traffic from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, 8/11 at the location of the interstate bridges. The detour route will utilize U.S. Route 5, the I-91 Access Road, and Back Westminster Road.
Williston - Expect a long-term lane shift on U.S. 2 between Gregory Drive, So. Burlington and Adams Court, Williston. Flaggers will be present allowing for construction vehicles in/out of the work areas with minimal impact to motorists. Possible lane shifts within the work area to allow for equipment operations.
Williston Park and Ride – Construction of a new park and ride facility along Vermont Route 2A continues. One-way alternating traffic will be required on VT 2A from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please use caution when traveling through the project area. Expect delays.
Wilmington-Brattleboro – A resurfacing project is underway on VT 9. Motorists can expect minimal traffic delays and alternating one-way traffic along VT 9 as crews continue to place shoulder gravel and conduct punch list and cleanup activities. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
