Vermont Agency of Transportation This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will have traffic impacts on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of July 31, 2023. Some projects are not included in the report this week as they have been temporarily suspended due to flood damage, the work site is inaccessible, or the contractors were repositioned to assist AOT with emergency response and repairs. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.
Interstates
I-89 Brookfield-Montpelier – Motorists can expect lane closures Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and a grooved traveling surface with uneven lanes. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph from MM 36.60 to Exit 8.
I-89 Richmond – Monday through Friday both southbound and northbound high-speed lanes will be closed from 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and the right shoulder remains closed all within the vicinity of the project area below the interstate.
I-89 Sharon – The Sharon Welcome Center on I-89 NB will be closed from August 1-22, 2023, for parking lot paving and facility maintenance. There will be no public access to the facility or parking, and the building will remain closed during this period. The Welcome Center will reopen on Wednesday, August 23rd, 2023, at 7:00 a.m.
I-89 White River Junction – Our partners at NHDOT are working on a multi-year bridge replacement project on I-89 over the Connecticut River. Motorists should expect daily lane closures and speed reductions over the northbound and southbound bridges.
I-91 Barton-Derby – A speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in effect through single-lane closures in both directions on I-91 from Exit 25 in Barton to Exit 27 in Derby for multiple work zones, daily Monday through Friday.
I-91 Bradford – Travelers should watch for shifting traffic patterns in the I-91 northbound lanes near Exit 16 as crews work to establish new permanent, single-lane closures. Southbound permanent lane closures in this area will remain as configured. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in place through the work zones.
I-91 Fairlee-St. Johnsbury – Motorists are advised that new traffic patterns have been implemented on I-91 in the northbound lanes near Exit 17 in Newbury and crews are continuing to work on reconfiguring the southbound lane closure. The southbound lanes near Exit 20 in St. Johnsbury have also been re-configured, but the Exit 20 southbound on-ramp remains closed with a signed detour in place. The temporary crossover for northbound traffic will remain in place at Exit 15 in Fairlee as work is done to complete a full deck replacement on the northbound bridge over Lake Morey Road. Lane width and speed limit reductions are currently in effect for all these work zones.
I-91 Lyndon-Barton –Travelers can expect grooved pavement, uneven lanes, and daily lane closures in both directions in the vicinity of active construction between Exits 23 and 25 from Monday to Friday during daytime construction hours (6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.). Speed is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone.
I-91 Westminster – A bridge deck replacement project over Vermont Route 121 is underway. Interstate 91 northbound and southbound have been reduced to one lane of travel across the bridges, and an alternating one-way traffic pattern regulated with temporary signals is in effect on VT 121 underneath the bridges. A speed reduction to 55 mph is in place within the project area on I-91. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone.
I-91 Westminster-Springfield – A resurfacing project is underway along I-91 N between Westminster and Springfield. Saturday July 29, and Monday, July 31, through Friday, August 4, motorists can expect lane closures on I-91 N between Exit 5 and Exit 8.
Around the State
Barre City – A roadway improvement project is underway at the intersection of VT 14/Maple Avenue and Merchant Street. Motorists can expect short to moderate delays on VT 14/Maple Avenue with a single-lane closure with alternating one-way traffic. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone and temporary traffic signals will be utilized to guide motorists through the work zone during nighttime hours.
Barre Town – A bridge replacement project is underway in Barre Town for Bridge #21 over Jail Branch. Bridge #21 and VT 110 between Old Route 302 and the Waterman/Websterville intersection remain closed to traffic. Saturday, July 29, and Sunday, July 30, motorists can expect one side of the roundabout at the intersection of VT 110 and U.S. 302 to be closed with alternating one-way traffic. Motorists should expect large trucks entering and exiting the project area and are reminded to use caution and be attentive as they travel through the work zone.
Bennington-Pownal – VT-279 will have drainage structure repairs, crack sealing, and eastbound paving work. U.S. 7 will undergo paving near the welcome center, along with ongoing work to shoulder and ditching improvements, guard rail repair, milling, and line striping. Motorists should expect flaggers, lane closures, and delays.
Berlin – A bridge replacement project continues along U.S. 302. Motorists can expect minimal traffic impacts. A single lane closure with alternating one-way traffic along U.S. 302 may be utilized. Speed advisory signs of 25 mph are in place for the traffic lane shift. Motorists are advised to follow the posted advisory speed and travel with caution through the work zone. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone as needed.
Brattleboro-Hinsdale – VT 142 remains closed from the intersection with Royal Road to 28 Vermon Street for roadway approach work for a bridge project. Separate signed detours for cars and trucks remain active. Local traffic should watch for concrete trucks entering and exiting the work zone this week.
Brattleboro-Newfane – A resurfacing project is underway along VT 30. Motorists can expect moderate delays and three traffic control packages with alternating one-way traffic on VT 30 between Brattleboro and Newfane. Motorists should exercise caution driving through the project limits as there are varying roadway surfaces, including gravel. Speed limits throughout the project area have been reduced to 40 mph.
Burlington – A roadway project continues along Shelburne Road and Shelburne Street, U.S. Route 7/South Willard Street (to the intersection with U.S. Route 2), and Alternate U.S. Route 7 (North/South Winooski Ave, St. Paul St.) to the intersection with Riverside Ave. Night time work hours are 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Expect delays in the vicinity of active operations. Parking restrictions will be in effect throughout the week on various portions of the project. Please observe all posted parking restrictions. Vehicles will be towed at the owner's expense.
Charlotte-So. Burlington – A roadway resurfacing project is underway along U.S. Route 7 from Shelburne to South Burlington. Nighttime work hours are 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Flagged, alternating traffic will be required in the vicinity of active operations. Delays may occur, particularly in the evening hours.
Chester – A culvert replacement project is underway along VT 10 just east of its intersection with VT 103. Travelers should expect short delays with one-way alternating traffic controlled by temporary signals.
Colchester – Construction continues on the Exit 16 Diverging Diamond Interchange located along U.S 2/7. During daytime hours, motorists should expect single-lane closures along U.S. 2/7 between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. with up to one travel lane closed in a single direction. During nighttime hours, motorists should expect lane closures between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. along U.S. 2/7 with at least one travel lane remaining open in each direction.
Hartford – A bridge replacement project is underway in Hartford on Bridge #7 on the VA Cutoff Road. A 60-day planned closure of VT 14 between Ferry Crossing Road and Christian Street is now in place. A signed detour is in place along the VA Cut Off Road, Mill Road, U.S. 4/5, and VT 14. Bike and pedestrian access are being maintained on VT 14.
Hartland – The Hartland 3 Corners intersection reconfiguration project continues. Milling of Quechee Road pavement has been completed. Motorists should expect flagged traffic at the U.S. 5/VT 12/Quechee Road intersection for conduit installation north on U.S. 5 throughout the week.
Killington – A bridge replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 just east of the Skyeship Gondola. The U.S. 4 Bridge #33 over the Ottauquechee River will remain closed and traffic will continue to use the temporary bridge located just upstream of the existing bridge. Mission Farm Road remains closed at its eastern intersection with U.S. 4. Motorist should expect potential intermittent short stoppages along U.S. 4 near the existing bridge.
A culvert replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 at Spring Hill Road just east of West Hill Road. The phase one detour is open, and traffic will continue to be shifted to the south side of U.S. 4, opposite side of Spring Hill Road. The phase one detour is narrow with added curvature to its alignment. Motorists are encouraged to reduce their speed throughout the work zone and follow all signed speed limits.
Marshfield-Danville – A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2. Motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 2 in Marshfield. Flaggers and Uniform Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. Motorists are advised to follow the posted speed limit and travel with caution as areas of the roadway are scarified and have a gravel surface with no markings indicating the centerline and edge line.
Montpelier – A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2 and U.S. 302. Beginning the night of Sunday, July 30, through the morning of Friday, August 4, from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., motorists can expect lane closures and alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 302 from the project limits at the Berlin/Montpelier town line to the intersection with U.S. 2 at the roundabout, and along U.S. 2 beginning at the eastern end of the project and continuing along U.S. 2 to the western end of the project near Baily Avenue.
Morgan – A culvert replacement project is nearing completion on Vermont Route 111 southeast of Seymour Lake. VT 111 has been reopened between Bear Mountain Road and Whitehill Loop Road. Expect one-way alternating traffic at the location of the culvert throughout the week. Minor delays may occur.
New Haven – Traffic will continue to be maintained as alternating one-way traffic on the VT-17 diversion road controlled by temporary traffic signals for 24-hours a day. Motorists are reminded that no right turn on red is allowed from Sawyer Road or East Street. Motorists should anticipate minor delays through the work zone.
North Hero – A deck replacement project is underway on the Mother's Bridge on U.S. Route 2 over Lake Champlain between North Hero Island and Alburgh. A lane closure is in effect regulated by temporary signals and will be in place throughout the summer and fall. In addition to signals, vehicular traffic through the bridge site should expect periods of stopped traffic throughout the week. A width restriction (12-foot travel lane) is in place. Delays should be anticipated.
Poultney – A tractor trailer will be bringing in steel stringers at the south end of the bridge replacement project at Thrall Road and River Street where a yield to one-way alternating traffic pattern remains in place through the work zone. Flaggers will be present to aid traffic through the work zone while the steel work is ongoing.
Richmond – Replacement of Bridge #29 along U.S. 2 over I-89. Travelers can expect lane closures with traffic control present allowing for one lane of alternating travel.
Richmond-Bolton – Rehabilitation of U.S. 2 continues. Motorists can expect delays within work areas due to one-way alternating traffic, Monday through Friday from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Motorists can also expect to be traveling on some areas of gravel surface between Millet Street and the I-89 interchange. Please slow down.
Royalton – Construction efforts for the VT 14 railroad bridge replacement and roadway realignment continue. Traffic is currently reduced to one lane with the use of temporary traffic signals. Please be aware of the 12’-1” overpass clearance and follow signage. Thursday, July 27th, 2023, through Sunday, August 6th, 2023, there will be no work on the project.
Thetford – NHDOT is leading a rehabilitation of the East Thetford-Lyme Bridge along VT 113. The bridge is closed for construction. Two signed detour routes are in place along I-91 connecting Fairlee, VT and Orford, NH in the north, and Norwich, VT and Hanover, NH in the south.
Waterbury – The contractor is scheduled to set granite curb and prep for new sidewalk this week, resulting in some sidewalk closures on the north side of Main Street and some alternating one-way traffic using flaggers.
Williston - Expect a long-term lane shift on U.S. 2 between Gregory Drive, So. Burlington and Adams Court, Williston. Flaggers will be present allowing for construction vehicles in/out of the work areas with minimal impact to motorists. Temporary lane shifts will be in place on Industrial Avenue for paving.
Williston Park and Ride – Construction of a new park and ride facility along Vermont Route 2A continues. One-way alternating traffic will be required on VT 2A between 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Please use caution when traveling through the project area. Expect delays.
Wilmington-Brattleboro – A resurfacing project is underway on VT 9. Motorists can expect minimal traffic delays and alternating one-way traffic along VT 9 as crews place shoulder gravel and begin punch list and clean-up activities. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
