Vermont Agency of Transportation This weekly report is a list of planned construction activities that will have traffic impacts on state highways and interstates throughout Vermont for the week of July 24, 2023. Some projects are not included in the report this week as they have been temporarily suspended due to flood damage, inaccessibility to the work site, or contractors repositioned to assist AOT with emergency response and repairs. Please remember to drive safely in all work zones. Lives depend on it.
Interstates
I-89 Brookfield-Montpelier – Motorist can expect lane closures Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and a grooved traveling surface with uneven lanes. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph from MM 36.60 to Exit 8.
I-89 Richmond – Monday through Friday both southbound and northbound high-speed lanes will be closed from 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and the right shoulder remains closed all within the vicinity of the project area below interstate.
I-89 White River Junction – Our partners at NHDOT are working on a multi-year bridge replacement project on I-89 over the Connecticut River. Motorists should expect daily lane closures and speed reductions over the northbound and southbound bridges.
I-91 Barton-Derby – Daily, single lane closures in both directions on I-91 from Exit 25 in Barton to Exit 27 in Derby are scheduled for multiple work zones, Monday through Friday. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph will be in effect.
I-91 Bradford – Permanent, single lane closures remain in place in both directions just north of Exit 16 where preventative maintenance repairs to multiple bridges are ongoing. A speed limit reduction to 55 mph is in place through the work zones.
I-91 Fairlee-St. Johnsbury – Motorists are advised to watch for shifting traffic patterns through the work zones along I-91 in both directions near Exit 17 in Newbury and in the southbound lanes near Exit 20 in St. Johnsbury. The configuration of these lane closures is scheduled to change this week as crews have completed repairs to one half of the bridges and work will begin on the other half. The temporary crossover for northbound traffic that has been implemented at Exit 15 in Fairlee as they work to complete a full deck replacement on the northbound bridge over Lake Morey Road will remain in place and the Exit 20 southbound on ramp in St. Johnsbury will remain closed with a signed detour in place. Lane width and speed limit reductions are currently in effect for all these work zones.
I-91 Lyndon – Barton –Travelers can expect grooved pavement, uneven lanes, and daily lane closures (both NB and SB) in the vicinity of active construction between Exits 23 and 25 from Monday to Friday during daytime construction hours (6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.). Speed is reduced to 55 mph in the work zone.
I-91 Westminster-Springfield – A resurfacing project is underway along I-91 N between Westminster and Springfield. Motorists can expect lane closures on I-91 N between Exit 5 and Exit 8.
Around the State
Barre City – A roadway improvement project is underway at the intersection of VT 14/Maple Avenue and Merchant Street. Motorists can expect short to moderate delays on VT 14/Maple Avenue with a single lane closure with alternating one-way traffic. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone and temporary traffic signals may be utilized to guide motorists through the work zone during nighttime hours.
Barre Town – A bridge replacement project is underway in Barre Town for Bridge #21 over Jail Branch. Bridge #21 on VT 110 remains closed. VT 110 between Old Route 302 and the Waterman/Websterville intersection remains closed to traffic. Motorist can expect delays on Old Route 302 due to large construction vehicles entering and exiting the roadway. Monday, July 24, through Sunday, July 30, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., motorists should expect minimal traffic impacts along VT 110.
Bennington-Pownal – VT-279 will have shoulder drainage repairs, crack sealing, and eastbound paving. US-7 will undergo paving near the welcome center, along with ongoing work to shoulder and ditching improvements, guard rail repair, and line striping. Milling is currently in Pownal and will progress south, resulting in uneven lanes. Driver should expect flaggers, lane closures, and delays.
Berlin – A bridge replacement project continues along U.S. 302. Friday, July 21, motorists can expect to see a traffic shift onto the north side of Bridge #3 while work begins on the south side of Bridge #3. Monday, July 24, through Friday, July 28, motorists should expect a single lane closure with alternating one-way traffic along U.S. 302. Speed advisory signs of 25 MPH have been placed ahead of the new lane shift. Motorists are advised to follow the posted advisory speed and travel with caution through the work zone. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone as needed.
Brattleboro-Hinsdale – VT 142 remains closed from the intersection with Royal Road to 28 Vermon Street for roadway approach work for a bridge project. Separate signed detours for cars and trucks remain active. Flaggers will be stationed at either end of the project as needed to assist local traffic and construction equipment in and out of the work zone.
Brattleboro-Newfane – A resurfacing project is underway along VT 30. Motorists can expect moderate delays and three traffic control packages with alternating one-way traffic on VT 30 between Brattleboro and Newfane. Motorists should exercise caution driving through the project limits as there are varying roadway surfaces, including gravel. Speed limits throughout the project area have been reduced to 40 mph.
Chester – A culvert replacement project is underway along VT 10 just east of its intersection with VT 103. Travelers should expect short delays with one-way alternating traffic controlled by temporary signals.
Colchester – Construction continues on the Exit 16 Diverging Diamond Interchange located along U.S 2/7. During daytime hours, motorists should expect single-lane closures along U.S. 2/7 between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. with up to one travel lane closed in a single direction. During nighttime hours, motorists should expect lane closures between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. along U.S. 2/7 with at least one travel lane remaining open in each direction.
Essex Junction – Work on the second phase of the Crescent Connector project has paused while the contractor has been called away to repair damage from the recent flooding. Currently we expect that they will restart the work on Monday, July 31st. Railroad Street will remain closed to through traffic. Pedestrians should continue to use the sidewalk on the west side of Park Street between the track crossings unless going to a business at 34 Park Street.
Hartford – A bridge replacement project is underway in Hartford on Bridge #7 on the VA Cutoff Road. A 60-day planned closure of VT 14 between Ferry Crossing Road and Christian Street is now in place. A signed detour is in place along the VA Cut Off Road, Mill Road, U.S. 4/5, and VT 14. Bike and pedestrian access is being maintained on VT 14.
Hartland – The Hartland 3 Corners intersection reconfiguration project continues. Motorists should expect flagged traffic at the U.S. 5/VT 12/Quechee Road intersection for catch basin and road drainage near intersection and Quechee Rd roadwork throughout the week.
Hinesburg – Crews are constructing a new sidewalk on VT 116 from the Hinesburg Community School to a new development beyond Friendship Lane. Travelers may encounter intermittent periods of alternating one-way traffic when dump trucks and other equipment are needed onsite.
Killington – A bridge replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 just east of the Skyeship Gondola. The U.S. 4 Bridge #33 over the Ottauquechee River will remain closed and traffic will continue to use the temporary bridge located just upstream of the existing bridge. Mission Farm Road remains closed at its eastern intersection with U.S. 4. Motorist should expect potential intermittent short stoppages along U.S. 4 near the existing bridge.
A culvert replacement project is underway on U.S. 4 at Spring Hill Road just east of West Hill Road. The phase one detour is open, and traffic will continue to be shifted to the south side of U.S. 4, opposite side of Spring Hill Road. The phase one detour is narrow with added curvature to its alignment. Motorists are encouraged to reduce their speed throughout the work zone and follow all signed speed limits.
Marshfield-Danville – A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2. Motorists can expect lane closures with alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 2 in Marshfield. Flaggers and Uniform Traffic Officers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone. Motorists are advised to follow the posted speed limit and travel with caution as areas of the roadway are scarified and have a gravel surface with no markings indicating the centerline and edge line. Motorists can expect to see hazards marked with cones and barrels along the edges of the roadway.
Montpelier – A resurfacing project is underway along U.S. 2 and U.S. 302. Sunday, July 23, through Friday, July 28, during nighttime hours, between 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., motorists will see lane closures and alternating one-way traffic on U.S. 2 beginning at the eastern end of the project and continuing along U.S. 2 to the roundabout.
New Haven – Starting on Monday, July 24 at 8am, the diversion road will be reduced to one lane between Sawyer Road and the west end of the project. This will continue for 24 hours per day until the paving operations are finished within the closure area. Temporary traffic signals will be in place on VT-17, East Street and Sawyer Road to allow for an alternating traffic pattern. Motorists should anticipate minor delays through the work zone.
Plymouth – A bridge deck replacement project is underway along VT 100 1.5 miles south of the intersection of VT 100 and VT 100A. A speed limit reduction to 40 mph is in effect with an alternating one-way traffic pattern regulated by temporary signals. Motorists can expect minor delays through the work zone.
Poultney – A bridge replacement project is ongoing at the intersection of Thrall Road and River Street where a yield to one-way alternating traffic pattern remains in place through the work zone. Local traffic should be advised that a crane will be placing floor beams throughout the week.
Richmond – Replacement of Bridge #29 along U.S. 2 over I-89. Travelers can expect lane closures with traffic control present allowing for one lane of alternating travel.
Richmond-Bolton – Rehabilitation of U.S. 2 continues. Motorists can expect delays within work areas due to one-way alternating traffic, Monday through Friday 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Motorists can also expect to be traveling on some areas of gravel surface between Millet Street and the I-89 interchange. Please slow down.
Royalton – Construction efforts for the VT 14 railroad bridge replacement and roadway realignment continue. Traffic is currently reduced to one lane with the use of temporary traffic signals. Please be aware of the 12’-1” overpass clearance and follow signage. Thursday, July 27th, 2023, through Monday, August 7th, 2023, there will be no work on the project.
Quechee – Work is expected to begin this month, though the contractor is waiting for the notice to proceed. Construction materials and equipment have been mobilized in the northwest parking area. The contractor submitted a traffic control plan to VTrans for review; if approved, US-4 will have one lane of alternating traffic. The public will be informed of the plan's approval and traffic disruptions via regular website updates.
Stowe-Cambridge – An environmental restoration/parking area and stormwater improvement project is underway along Scenic VT 108 “The Notch” between Stowe and Cambridge. Motorists may encounter periods of one-way alternating traffic along this route as work continues at areas between the former Long Trail and Hell Brook North Parking Areas. Please note, tractor trailers are prohibited from the “The Notch” road.
Thetford – NHDOT is leading a rehabilitation of the East Thetford-Lyme Bridge along VT 113. The bridge is closed for construction. Two signed detour routes are in place along I-91 connecting Fairlee, VT and Orford, NH in the north, and Norwich, VT and Hanover, NH in the south.
Waterbury – The contractor is scheduled to set granite curb and prep for new sidewalk this week, resulting in some sidewalk closures on the north side of Main Street and some alternating one-way traffic using flaggers.
Williston - Expect a long-term lane shift on U.S. 2 between Gregory Drive, So. Burlington and Adams Court, Williston. Flaggers will be present allowing for construction vehicles in/out of the work areas with minimal impact to motorists. Temporary lane shifts will be in place on Industrial Avenue for paving.
Wilmington-Brattleboro – A resurfacing project is underway on VT 9. Motorists can expect moderate traffic delays and alternating one-way traffic in Marlboro as crews continue line striping along VT 9. Flaggers will be present to assist motorists through the work zone.
