Vermont Business Magazine On July 19, 2023, at approximately 5:21 a.m., officers with University of Vermont Police Services responded to a burglary complaint located at 500 South Prospect Street in Burlington, Vt. While conducting their investigation, attempts were made to contact a subject in the area based on information provided at the scene. As officers attempted to speak with the male subject, later identified as 38-year-old Jonathan M. Vachereau, he immediately fled from the officers, ignoring orders for him to stop. While officers pursued him on foot, Vachereau was seen leaving in a car that was left in the area.

Approximately 30 minutes later, UVM Police responded to a separate report of a burglary in progress and located Vachereau, who was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the UVM Medical Center for unrelated medical issues, then provided a citation to appear in court at a later date.

Roughly 10 minutes later, UVM Police were notified that Vachereau had exited UVM Medical Center's Emergency Department and entered an adjacent UVM-owned property, violating a trespass notice issued to Vachereau previously. While on UVM property, he took control of an unattended vehicle that was parked and left without the owner’s consent.

Officers from UVM Police Services and Burlington PD located the vehicle in the area of South Prospect St and Maple Street and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. While stopped by multiple marked police cruisers, Vachereau reversed the vehicle, striking an occupied UVM Police Services cruiser. The vehicle then drove away evading another marked cruiser. The vehicle was soon relocated near the UVM Medical Center.

Vachereau was quickly located and taken into custody. He was processed and is facing arraignment in Chittenden County District Court for multiple criminal violations.

Vachereau’s Criminal History includes 31 previous Misdemeanor Charges with 18 convictions, a Felony charge, as well as 3 previous Assaultive Crime Charges with 1 conviction. He also has 11 Violations of Court Orders or Conditions with 6 convictions.

The University of Vermont Police would like to thank Burlington Police and the University of Vermont Medical Center for their assistance.
