Killington Resort plans reopening after torrential rainstorm

Vermont Business Magazine Vermont’s Killington Resort, the largest mountain resort in Eastern North America and a POWDR company, announced today it will reopen for summer operations on Wednesday, July 12, following the powerful storm that soaked the region in 7 plus inches of rain. Operations reopening Wednesday include Mountain Biking on Snowshed & Ramshead (The K-1 Gondola and Adventure Center are closed on Tuesday & Wednesday throughout the summer), Mountain Bike camps, The Pico Fitness Center, Daycare and Food and Beverage locations. The golf course is still being assessed but they anticipate reopening the front 9 on Wednesday.

This storm has been the most devastating to Vermont since Hurricane Irene in 2011, leaving many roads and nearby towns underwater. Killington Resort was fortunate to experience relatively minor damage from the storm, but was closed on Monday, July 10 and Tuesday, July 11, and all non-essential team members were instructed to stay home and stay safe.

The Town of Killington including select board members, fire and police departments worked non-stop through both storms, along with the help of local construction companies to mitigate damage wherever possible. During the first storm which hit on July 8, sections of East Mountain Road, accessing Bear Mountain and Sunrise Village, were damaged by flooding and a mudslide closed Route 4 near the Skyeship base. Crews were able to provide temporary access for about 50 residents, who were urged to evacuate that area on July 10 as the second storm threatened. East Mountain Road remains closed at this time, but the town expects things to improve quickly.

The Bear Mountain and Skyeship Lodges experienced some flooding and additional damage is being assessed in the Skyeship base area. We were able to mitigate some of the potential damage during the storm by adding fill to divert the flow of water around Ramshead and K-1 Lodges, borrowing material that was provided by the town of Killington for the East Mountain repairs. Crews are now using that same material to rebuild the road.

The town of Killington and the resort remains accessible from the West via Route 4 and North via 100, however Route 100 to the South and Route 4 to the East are impassable at this time. The most up-to-date road information on road closures can be found at newengland511.org

“With the surrounding areas suffering catastrophic damage, Killington Resort was fortunate to be able to help our neighbors,.” says Killington Resort and Pico Mountain President and General Manager Mike Solimano. “For example, we were able to provide freezer space for a local bakery caught in the flood path. Other local resorts and businesses have reached out if we need any support and we have done the same – in particular to our friends in Ludlow and Londonderry who have been hit hardest. Killington is a community that supports each other as One Killington, and we are proud to be Vermont strong as we embark on the recovery process together.”

As we work to recover together, Killington Resort would like to extend gratitude to the Town of Killington, Killington Fire and Police Departments, Casella, Mosher and Ray Harvey and Fiore Construction, VTrans, Green Mountain Power and the Agency of Transportation for their hard work to repair the damage. Our thoughts are with all those affected by the storm and the safety of all residents, construction workers and safety personnel is our top priority at this time. If planning to visit, please avoid regions with road closures, use caution when traveling through work zones, and be prepared for delays.
