Managing forests for birds and old growth characteristics

by Ethan Tapper, Chittenden County Forester We will be doing two evening educational events at the Catamount Community Forest in Williston over the next two weeks, each focusing on different aspects of the upcoming forest management project at the CCF. The first -- this Thursday, June 22 -- will be with Audubon Vermont, and will focus on managing forests for vibrant bird habitat. The second will be an event with Vermont Coverts: Woodlands for Wildlife on Tuesday, June 27 which will focus on using forest management to restore old growth characteristics to our forests. For details, see below.

Managing Forests for the Birds

Thursday, June 22
6:00-8:00 PM

How can responsible forest management help create vibrant habitat for Vermont’s birds? Join Ethan Tapper, the Chittenden County Forester, and Jacob Crawford and Tim Duclos of Audubon Vermont for a free, public walk at the Catamount Community Forest. We’ll walk an area of the CCF which will be managed this September and talk about forests, forest management, birds, and forest ecology.

Audubon Vermont’s Foresters for the Birds program, a partner of Vermont’s Department of Forest, Parks and Recreation since the program’s establishment in 2008, is an innovative project that works to keep forests as forests and common birds common by advancing principles and on-the-ground projects that integrate the practices of forest management and songbird habitat management across the state of Vermont.

To join, meet at the Catamount Outdoor Family Center at 553 Governor Chittenden Road, Williston. Be prepared to spend two hours outdoors, rain or shine!

Restoring Old Growth Characteristics

Tuesday, June 26
6:00pm – 8:00pm

Join VT Coverts and Chittenden County Forester Ethan Tapper to learn about old growth forests -- what they're like, how they work, and how amazing they are-- and how forest management can help restore old growth characteristics and the many benefits that they provide, from climate resilience to diverse wildlife habitat. We will visit an area at the Catamount Community Forest which will be managed this summer and talk about how this work will help this forest become more diverse, complex and resilient, and more like an old growth forest.

To join, meet at the Catamount Outdoor Family Center at 553 Governor Chittenden Road, Williston. Be prepared to spend two hours outdoors, rain or shine!
