David Serkin Ludwig, dean and director of the music division at the Juilliard School in New York City and composer-in-residence at the Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival in Winooski, has been named one of four recipients of this year's Arts and Letters Award in Music by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
The award, which honors outstanding artistic achievement and acknowledges composers "who have arrived at their own voice," carries a cash prize of $10,000 plus an additional $10,000 for winners to record their work for presentation at a future academy concert. Winners were selected by a committee of academy members and will be honored at the academy's ceremonial on May 23.
Ludwig has been an integral part of the chamber music festival since its inception and has mentored countless young composers through its Young Composers Seminar. He also curates the organization's "Inside Pitch" lectures.
