University of Vermont faculty members Sefakor Komabu-Pomeyie and Marie Vea were named recipients of the university's 2022 Prelock Online Teaching Award in recognition of their superior online teaching. The award is named in honor of Provost and Senior Vice President Patricia Prelock, an early adopter of online teaching at UVM.
Komabu-Pomeyie, an adjunct lecturer in the College of Education and Social Services, was honored in the asynchronous category for her course Global Disability Studies. She interviewed professionals internationally to create content for the online course.
“Receiving this award is very fulfilling because it is an added value, a great honor and, above all, another way of empowerment from my students,” Komabu-Pomeyie said.
Vea, assistant dean for student services and staff development at the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, won in the synchronous category
for her online course Ways of Knowing. Judges called the course "transformative," noting Vea's ability to connect to her students through humility, vulnerability and responsiveness.
“It is meaningful to be recognized by and with the people who make the experience possible,” said Vea. “Individually, we embody both teacher and learner; with this understanding and invitation, we co-created an online space where we could express our unique ways of knowing in rigorous and highly creative ways.”
