Howard Center is pleased to announce that Medical Director of Howard Center’s Chittenden Clinic, John Brooklyn, MD, recently received the prestigious Nyswander/Dole Award which recognizes outstanding contributions to opioid treatment. The award was presented at the 2019 American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence Conference on October 22, 2019 by Icro Maremmani, MD.
The presentation was a moving tribute to those individuals who have been nominated and selected by their peers for extraordinary service in the opioid treatment community. The award recipients have devoted themselves to improving the lives of patients in our treatment system. “I am honored to be the recipient of this prestigious award. I am grateful to have worked with my colleagues at Howard Center, the Community Health Centers of Burlington, the University of Vermont College of Medicine, BAART behavioral service and Vermont Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs over the decades to make opioid treatment widely available throughout Vermont,” comments Dr. Brooklyn. “We have more people in treatment for opioid dependence in VT, per capita, than anywhere else in the US and have saved countless lives during the current opioid epidemic. I thank all of my current and former patients for informing my practice through their struggles and successes with opioid treatment.”
Dana Poverman, LADC, LCMHC, Howard Center’s Director of Medication Assisted Treatment states “John has been a driving force in changing the minds and hearts of medical providers and the public. Due to his efforts and willingness to collaborate, question, and challenge when necessary, Vermont has no one waiting for treatment.” Dr. Vincent Dole and Dr. Marie Nyswander were the first recipients of this Award in 1983. The Association has been responsible for bestowing this honor since the first Regional Conference of 1984 in New York. Dr. Brooklyn has over 25 years of experience in substance use treatment.
