Promotion announcement – Captain/Commander, Major Crime Unit

Col Matthew T Birmingham, director of the Vermont State Police, is pleased to announce the following promotion: Lt Scott Dunlap, commander of the Major Crime Unit-South, to captain/Major Crime Unit Commander at Headquarters. The promotion is effective Jan 6, 2019.

Captain Dunlap has served the people of Vermont since January 2004, when he began his career with the Vermont State Police as a trooper at the Shaftsbury Barracks. He became a detective trooper with the Special Investigations Unit-South in 2010, then was promoted to detective sergeant at the Brattleboro Barracks in 2013. He transferred to the Major Crime Unit in 2015 before earning a promotion to lieutenant and commander of the MCU for B Troop in December 2016.

Dunlap also has served as a Vermont State Police K-9 handler and was a member of the Crash Reconstruction Team.

The Major Crime Unit, which falls under the Vermont State Police Criminal Division, investigates Vermont’s most serious offenses, especially homicides and suspicious missing-persons cases, along with officer-involved shootings.
