The Hunger Free Vermont Board of Directors has named Anore Horton as its permanent Executive Director after an exhaustive national search. Horton, who had been the Acting Executive Director since January, is no stranger to Hunger Free Vermont’s donors, professional partners, friends, and employees, as she has been with the organization in various capacities over the last eight years.
“After looking across the country, we couldn’t be more pleased to find the best person for the job right here,” said Darren Allen, who chairs the board. “We are impressed with Anore’s rigor, thoughtfulness, and transparency, and have the utmost confidence that she will lead this organization well into the future.”
Before being appointed Acting Executive Director, Horton was the Nutrition Initiatives Director, guiding Hunger Free’s approach to hunger alleviation. Before that, she was Hunger Free Vermont’s Child Nutrition Advocacy Manager where she honed her skills managing all of their Child Nutrition Initiatives. Prior to joining Hunger Free, Horton was a college professor in Vermont, North Carolina, and New Jersey. She taught history, including the history of American progressive and social justice movements.
Since January, Horton has streamlined internal operations, reaffirmed priorities, and begun working on new ways to collaborate with other organizations who are committed to ending hunger and food insecurity. “I am committed to expanding our work to meet the ever-escalating challenges facing many Vermonters when it comes to hunger,” Horton said. “We are going to meet those needs with bold initiatives that emphasize universality – especially for children, and that expand Vermonters' access to the healthy food they need to thrive, from infants to older adults. Now is not the time to cede any ground on the advances we’ve already made. Now is the time to prove what our brave little state can do when we lead the fight to end the injustice of hunger and malnutrition in Vermont and in America.”
