Donald Mathews, MD, has been named chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont (UVM) and chief of the Anesthesiology Health Care Service at The University of Vermont Health Network. Mathews joined UVM in 2010 as associate professor and director of the Anesthesiology Residency Program, and was promoted to full professor in 2013. He succeeds Mazen Maktabi, MD, who served as chair and chief from August 2016.

He has authored 28 peer-reviewed papers and more than 30 editorial and opinion papers in his field. He serves as board advisor of the Scientific Papers Committee of the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia (SAMBA), where he is a past member of the Board of Directors, and is also associate editor of the British Journal of Anaesthesia.
An undergraduate alumnus of Harvard College, Mathews earned his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed a residency in anesthesiology at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, followed by a critical care and surgical metabolism research fellowship. Immediately prior to joining UVM, he served as vice chair and residency program director for the Department of Anesthesiology at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York. At UVM, he served as an elected member of the UVM Health Network Medical Group Board of Directors and as a special advisor to the president & CEO of the UVM Health Network Medical Group.
“Dr. Mathews is an outstanding clinician, internationally recognized scholar, and dedicated mentor and educational leader,” said UVM Larner College of Medicine Dean Frederick Morin, MD, and Claude Deschamps, MD, president of the UVM Health Network Medical Group. “We are excited to have him in this important role at our academic medical center.”
