Norwich University Assistant Professor of Architecture Tolya Syril Stonorov has been named the 2016 winner of Vermont Women in Higher Education’s (VWHE) Peggy R Williams Emerging Professional Award.
The Peggy R Williams Emerging Professional Award, named for the former Lyndon State and Ithaca College president, is presented to a woman who is in the early stages of her career, demonstrates excellence in her contributions to students, colleagues, and/or her institution (in such areas as service, innovative programs, teaching, research, etc), and shows promise and potential for future contributions.
An engaging teacher with a passion for her chosen field, Stonorov is well-regarded by students for her creative approach to teaching the art and science of architecture. She recently led a team of third and fourth-year architecture students in transforming a vintage Airstream Globetrotter into the “Archistream,” a mobile outreach, education, and design center for the Vermont chapter of the American Institute of Architects. This project toured the state and was a featured exhibit at the Build Boston convention.
The design and construction of CASA 802 (Creating Affordable Sustainable Architecture) married the teaching of design/build fundamentals with a real-world mission. The 324-square foot tiny house represents a joint venture between Architecture, Engineering and Construction Management to create sustainable, beautiful and affordable housing for low-income people.
Stonorov is currently working on a book, “The Design Build Studio | Crafting Meaningful Work in Architecture Education,” due to be published in April 2017.
The Peggy R Williams Emerging Professional Award will be presented at the VWHE Annual Fall Dinner, to be held on Tuesday, October 11, at the Roy Event Center at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vt.
