Sterling College has named Margo Baldwin to its Board of Trustees.
Baldwin is the President and Publisher of Chelsea Green Publishing, the White River Junction, VT-based book publishing company she co-founded with her husband Ian Baldwin in 1984. Chelsea Green is considered the preeminent publisher of books on the politics and practice of sustainable living, including foundational books on organic agriculture and permaculture; green building and renewable energy; local economies and the Transition movement; eco-cuisine and local food systems; and systems thinking and holistic management strategies.
Chelsea Green has over 350 books in print and has had four New York Times bestsellers, including The Art of Fermentation by Sandor Ellix Katz. In 2012, Foreword Reviews, a trade review journal that covers the independent, alternative, university and self-publishing industries, named Chelsea Green its independent publisher of the year.
“Margo brings considerable experience in leading a values-focused enterprise to the board, as well as a deep commitment to environmental stewardship,” said Sterling College President Matthew Derr. “She brings the intelligence, energy, community orientation, and visionary thinking that would benefit any governing board. We are fortunate that she is willing to devote her considerable skills to Sterling.”
He continued, “With Margo joining our Board of Trustees, we now have a group of visionary Vermont business leaders helping to steer Sterling College in the 21st century, such as Allison Hooper, the co-founder of Vermont Creamery, and Tom Stearns, the founder and head seedsman at High Mowing Organic Seeds.”
Regarding her appointment, Baldwin said: “Sterling College is making a huge contribution to the wellbeing of society by focusing on humans’ changing relationship with the natural world. I’m looking forward to working with the entire Sterling community.”
Founded in 1958 in Craftsbury Common, Sterling College is the leading voice in higher education for environmental stewardship. The College was among the first colleges in the United States to focus on sustainability through academic majors in Ecology, Environmental Humanities, Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems, and Outdoor Education. Sterling College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and is one of only seven federally recognized Work Colleges in the nation.
