Suzi Wizowaty received the David W. Curtis Civil Liberties Award from the ACLU-Vt. on Nov. 7 at the ACLU’s annual meeting in Montpelier. Wizowaty was commended for her leadership of Vermonters for Criminal Justice Reform, the non-profit she founded in 2013 while a member of the state legislature.
“Our first project in 2013 was to convene the Vermont Justice Coalition,” Wizowaty said. “The ACLU was not only one of our original members but remains a core partner, along with the Human Rights Commission, the Commission on Women, the Dept. of Corrections, Justice for All, Vermont Law School’s legal clinic, and a half-dozen other terrific organizations.”
Vermonters for Criminal Justice Reform is an advocacy and education organization whose mission is to work for a more restorative and effective criminal justice response. Wizowaty stepped down from the state legislature in 2013 after three terms in order to direct the work full time.
The ACLU award is named in memory of David W. Curtis, a lifelong advocate for civil rights who died in 1999.
