Math instructor for the Stern Center for Language and
Learning, Anita Long, Ed.D., recently presented at the National Council of
Teachers of Mathematics Regional Conference & Exposition in Atlantic City,
NJ. Long, who has been teaching math for more than 25 years, shared her
expertise through a workshop entitled “Universal Design for Education in
Mathematics.”
The workshop was created to extend the knowledge of classroom teachers of
math ranging from kindergarten to grade 12. The focus of the presentation was
to help teachers better understand the needs of diverse learners, such as
students lacking executive function skills, those with limited working
memory, ADHD, and other learning differences. Furthermore, Long recommended
concrete techniques that educators can utilize in their classrooms to ensure
that math is accessible to all learners.
Long says, “The NCTM Conference is an important event for teachers, perhaps
especially elementary teachers who are bombarded with so many
responsibilities and expectations that math is not always a big focus. This
conference works to remedy that.”
The NCTM Regional Conference & Exposition lasted for three days and featured
more than 300 experts in the field of mathematics.
