For Ray Bates, family life and work as a Master Clockmaker take place under the same roof. For 50 years, Bates’ antique clock repair business has been located in his home in Newfane. Established in London in 1957, The British Clockmaker has become an American institution. In 1964 he moved from Boston to Newfane, Vermont. Working with his son Richard, who has spent 18 years becoming a Master Clockmaker and aims to reach his own 50-year mark, the two restore and conserve fine 17th, 18th, and 19th century clocks and barometers for discerning owners, collectors and institutions. Ray appears frequently on TV, has been featured in several magazine articles, and was recently featured on Vermont Public Radio. Ray Bates is known internationally as a consultant, and restorer of major clock collections, both public and private, throughout the USA and Canada.
