Salvation Army announces appointment of new corps officer in Burlington

The Northern New England Division of The Salvation Army announces the appointment of Major Patti & Lieutenant Scott Murray as officers and pastors ot the Burlington, Vermont Corps. Major and Lieutenant Murray replace Captains William and Stephanie Thompson who received a new assignment. During the Murray’s years of service with The Salvation Army, they have demonstrated their commitment to serving others. “We look forward to meeting our new neighbors and working together with the community to address the needs of families and individuals in the area,” said Major Murray

The Burlington Corps offers general assistance of food, clothing and utilities. During the summer, children have the opportunity to attend The Salvation Army’s Camp Sebago in Standish. During the holidays The Salvation Army will assist families with meals and gifts. Beginning with the new school year, The Salvation Army in Burlington will open The Salvation Army Learning Zone, a state licensed after school program. The Learning Zone will include homework assistance as well as additional education and recreational opportunities. Each child will also be provided with dinner every school day. These efforts help serve the primary commitment of The Salvation Army, which is to help meet the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of all people.

Major and Lieutenant Murray will lead the center’s weekly worship service on Sunday at 11:00 AM and invites everyone who doesn’t have a church home to come and worship. There is also Sunday School for all ages at 10:00AM. Come fall, there will be programs offered throughout the week for children and adults.

Prior to appointment here in Burlington, Major Murray had appointments at Oil City PA, The Salvation Army College for Officer Training, Utica NY, Empire State Divisional Headquarters in Syracuse NY, White Plains NY, Punxsutawney PA, Vandegrift PA, Corry PA, Johnstown PA and Sharon PA. Major Murray graduated from The Salvation Army College for Officer Training and was ordained and commissioned as an officer in 1980. She also holds a Bachelor Degree in Community & Human Services.

Lieutenant Murray shared with his wife, Major Murray, a corps appointment in Oil City, Pennsylvania before coming to Burlington. He graduated from the The Salvation Army College for Officer Training and was ordained and commissioned as an officer in 2012. Prior to entering The Salvation Army College for Officer Training, Lieutenant Murray had a long career in the employee benefits insurance industry. Lt. Murray holds an Associate Degree in Applied Ministry.

Major and Lieutenant Murray are excited to be here in Burlington and are looking forward to doing what God has called them to do and the challenges that face them. The Salvation Army has ministered to the needs of the residents of the greater Burlington area since 1885 and deeply values its role in our community.
