VCSEA has selected a number of Vermont educators for their annual awards presentation at the annual Vermont Council of Special Education Administrators (VCSEA) / Vermont Superintendents Association (VSA) conference at the Lake Morey Resort on May 22.
Beth Hemingway, Director of Student Support Services for the Grand Isle Supervisory Union, was named the Gail Lynk Special Education Administrator of the Year for 2013-2014. She has been described both as a “champion for kids” and “relentless advocate for students with special needs.” Active in many organizations, Beth has served on the Franklin/Grand Isle Building Bright Futures Committee and Truancy Response Team as well as on the High Risk Team with the Department of Children and Families. As a member of the Board of Directors of VCSEA she has provided dedicated service as the Treasurer.
Linell Valiseca, Special Educator at the Champlain Valley Union High School in Hinesburg, was selected as VCSEA’s Individual Golden Apple Award recipient. She is a role model for her peers in professional service for students with special education needs and is highly respected by students, families, and colleagues.
Team Sojourn from Riverside Middle School in Springfield was the recipient of the Team Golden Apple Award. This multidisciplinary team exemplifies inclusionary practices that fully embrace the value of each student to the learning community. Members of the team include Jeff Vandivere, Mary Ellen Schofield, Tom Green, Franco Chiapperini, Meredith Jez, Val Gasco, and Darlene Petke.
