Burlington school food project director to participate in state roundtable series

On November 29th, 2012, Burlington School Food Project Director Doug Davis will participate in the first roundtable discussion of the Department of Education monthly series "Education – Join the Conversation". The title of the discussion, to start at 2:15 p.m. at the Department of Education, 120 State Street, 4th Floor, Montpelier, VT, will be "Let's Talk About Nutrition".

To quote from the Department of Education: "We see the cafeteria as the largest classroom in our schools. This roundtable discussion will focus on the USDA’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. This is the first major change in school meals in 15 years, so it’s important to explore the benefits and challenges of implementing these new nutrition standards in our schools. We will talk about the agriculture-economy-education connection, the farm-to-school movement, and school gardens. Another important facet that will be discussed is how nutrition plays into poverty and why it is crucial for our children to be well fed and ready to learn. We will discuss H.234, an act relating to providing state financial support for school lunches, summer meals, and snacks for low income children."

Roundtable participants:

Armando Vilaseca, Commissioner, Vermont Department of Education

Marissa Parisi, Executive Director, Hunger Free Vermont

Abbie Nelson, Director, Vermont FEED

Doug Davis, President, School Nutrition Association of Vermont

Brooke Gannon, Child Nutrition Programs, Vermont Department of Education
