StJA Teacher leads frisbee team to national title

For most of us, Ultimate Frisbee is a game we play at the beach, a music festival, or a local park. St. Johnsbury Academy teacher Josh Seamon pursues it more seriously. For the past six years Mr. Seamon has been coaching Boston Ultimate Disc Alliance’s (BUDA) Coed Ultimate Frisbee team. Each year he has taken the team to USA Ultimate’s Youth Club Championships, placing among the top three for the past five years. This year, Mr. Seamon and his team travelled to Blaine, Minnesota, where they won the USA Ultimate Mixed Division Championship.

Comprising ten girls and twelve boys from thirteen schools in Massachusetts, New York, and Vermont, the BUDA team beat Minneapolis, MN, Madison, WI, and New York City, NY, in pool play to advance to the quarterfinals. After a victory over Chicago and then another over Maine in the semifinals, the team went on to beat Seattle in the championship match by a score of 13-7.

Two graduates from the Academy’s Class of 2012 played on the team, Julian Grant and Cyrus Ready-Campbell. Both students played four years of Varsity Ultimate Frisbee for the Academy and were on the team that won the Vermont State Championship last spring.
