Rep. Peter Welch has announced that Jacob Jackmauh of St. Johnsbury Academy has won the 31st Annual Congressional Art Competition for high school students. Jackmauh’s piece, “Aaaah!,” will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.
Taking second place was Lucie Stein of Colchester High School with the piece “Unfinished Evolution.” In third was Jamie Cyr of the Danville School with “Self Portrait.”
“I am so impressed by the talent and creativity of these young Vermont artists,” Welch said. “Their work continues Vermont’s storied tradition of artistic excellence and is a reflection of our state’s first-rate art programs.”
This year’s competition featured artwork from 158 Vermont high school students from 34 schools throughout the state. The competition was once again sponsored by IBM and the Vermont Arts Council.
The Congressional Art Competition is a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of local artists in each district select the winning entries, which are then displayed for one year at the Capitol. The competition was initiated by former Rep. Jim Jeffords in 1981.
