Vermont Wood Manufacturers Association recognizes Woodworker of the Year and Friend of the Industry

On March 23 at their Annual Meeting, the Vermont Wood Manufacturers Association (VWMA) honored David Bazis of David Bazis Designs with the 2011 VWMA Woodworker of the Year Award and David Spooner of Spooner Specialties with the 2011 Friend of the Industry Award.

David Bazis currently holds the position of Instructor in the Design and Technology Education department at U-32 High School in Montpelier, VT. David has been instrumental in woodworking education for the next generation woodworkers in Vermont. Bazis has spent countless hours with his students focusing on every design and detail of their woodworking projects. The expertise and encouragement he brings with his woodworking instruction cannot be denied at the VWMA’s Annual Vermont Woodworking Student Design Competition, as his students’ work took award almost every year.

David Spooner has been owner of Spooner Specialties, a full-service woodworking tools and accessories shop in Montpelier, VT since 1981. Spooner Specialties has been working with Vermont schools for over 30 years taking care of their needs with woodworking machinery and supplies. David is a Member of the Specialty Tools & Fasteners Distributors Association (STAFDA) and has assisted the VWMA in soliciting prizes for the Vermont Woodworking Design Competition. Spooner has also contributed prizes for the student level of the Design Competition, as well as other competitions like SKILLS USA, for several years.

The Vermont Wood Manufacturers Association represents nearly 120 primary and secondary wood product companies and related businesses statewide that employ approximately 6,000 people. VWMA’s mission is to support the industry in Vermont and promote its long-term viability by expanding members’ presence in the marketplace, ensuring a sustainable supply of raw materials, increasing workforce skill and acting as responsible employers and community members.
