Library Co-Director Amber Collins to retire

The City of Burlington announced today that long-time co-director of the Fletcher Free Library, Amber Collins, will be retiring as of June 30, the end of her current term of appointment. Ms. Collins has served as a co-director since 1992, when the library co-director positions were created, and served as Assistant Director since 1997. Her fellow co-directors are Robert Resnik and Robert Coleburn. Ms. Collins’ position of Assistant Director is the sole exempt position at the library, overseeing building and grounds, finance, and personnel.

Ms. Collins began her career at the Fletcher Free Library 45 years ago, in 1967, working in the Circulation Department. Her library career has included work as the head of the Acquisitions Department and as the Adult Services librarian. She attained her State of Vermont Librarian Certification in 1985.

“I want to thank Amber for her years of commitment and service to the City and people of Burlington,” said Mayor Bob Kiss. “The Fletcher Free Library is a critical community resource encompassing a wide array of services for people of all ages and backgrounds. Amber’s leadership has helped make the Library what it is today. She will be missed.”

Ms. Collins thanked Mayor Kiss and recognized staff and volunteers with the Library. “This June will mark my forty-fifth year working at the Fletcher Free Library,” she said. “I’m proud and grateful for having reached this milestone, and feel it is time to move on to the next stage of my life. My library co-workers, Friends of the Library, the Library Board, and other volunteers are dedicated and thoughtful about the good services and programs we provide to the Burlington community. We’ve made a good team during my tenure.”

The Library co-director positions are subject to annual appointment by the Mayor in June.
