East Montpelier Native joins Gifford Midwifery Practice

A Vermont native with more than 25 years of certified

nurse-midwifery experience has returned to the Green Mountain State and

joined Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.

Certified nurse-midwife Donna Butler grew up in East Montpelier, attending

Montpelier High School and then the “new” U-32 high school when it opened

her junior year. She went on to the University of Vermont to study nursing,

collecting her bachelor’s degree, and then to the University of Utah,

earning her master’s degree in parent-child nursing and nurse-midwifery in

1980.

She’s since worked in Utah and Oregon with a variety of practices, including

county health departments, an HMO in Salt Lake City, various private

practices in Oregon, the Women’s Health Center of Oregon midwifery service

at Willamette Falls Hospital in Oregon City, and most recently in private

practice as a primary care provider. She’s also taught nursing at

Westminster College in Salt Lake City and Oregon Health Science University.

She is board certified by, and a member of, the American College of

Nurse-Midwives. Her clinical interests include focusing on women’s health

for the whole person and within their family system, preventative care,

health care maintenance and education.

It was an unlikely educator who directed Butler toward her midwifery career.

As a high school junior, her math teacher (whose wife was expecting their

first child) suggested nurse-midwifery as a career possibility.

After initially considering medical school, she jumped on the idea and made

it her career.

She is looking forward to continuing that career at Gifford – a hospital she

is finding “friendly, outgoing, welcoming and extremely likeable.”

She joins a team of midwives offering care in two locations: at the Gifford

Health Center at Berlin located off from Airport Road in Berlin, Vt., and at

the main hospital on Route 12 in Randolph.

She is now living back in East Montpelier. She is a mother of three grown

children, and in her free time enjoys walking, reading and learning how to

can vegetables.
