Mathematics Professor receives top service award at St Michael’s College

George L. Ashline, Saint Michael's College professor of mathematics, earned the top Saint Michael’s service award, the Norbert A. Kuntz Service Award, for 2010, as selected by his faculty colleagues and presented at the Academic Convocation September 24 in the McCarthy Arts Center on the college campus.

Professor Ashline, a member of the SMC faculty since 1995, was sited for outstanding service to students, the math department, the Catholic community, and his hometown of Winooski and greater Vermont. He has chaired the college’s enrollment management committee since 2006, and previously served on the financial aid, admissions, curriculum and educational policy committees, and the faculty council.

His outreach to future students through admission office programs has brought Saint Michael’s to the attention of numerous students. He has also reached future students giving mathematics talks in high schools through the Vermont State Math Coalition, and has led math workshops for many Vermont teachers

Professor Ashline’s willingness to spend time helping students after class and into the evening is almost legendary. Additionally, he and his wife Pat host students at dinners in their home. He serves as an adviser at Summer Advising Days for new students, as a faculty dorm visitor, and regularly organizes panels of alumni and guest speakers to introduce students to careers in mathematics and related fields.

As a member of the Pontigny Society Advisory Board and the LEAP Retreat Secretariat, Professor Ashline helps promote the Catholic and Edmundite traditions. His commitment has led him to participate in college service trips, to serve as a lector at Saint Francis parish, and as treasurer of the Winooski Council of the Knights of Columbus.
