Peter Langrock of the law firm of Langrock, Sperry & Wool, LLP has just returned from participating as a guest arbitrator at the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna, Austria. More than two hundred fifty law schools from over 60 countries competed in the annual event this year, which is designed to train law leaders of tomorrow in methods of alternative dispute resolution.
“This is the eleventh consecutive year that I have participated as a guest arbitrator in this event,” said Langrock. “A growing percentage of international disputes are being resolved using alternative dispute resolution. The opportunity to engage in a moot in an international setting provides valuable experience for the law students who will be resolving these disputes in the future.”
A moot is a simulated legal proceeding that allows law students to role-play cases and learn from their performance in the process. This particular moot involved a dispute arising out of a contract of sale between two countries that are party to the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. The contract provides that any dispute that might arise is to be settled by arbitration in the fictitious country of Danubia and so the exercise plays out from there. More than 500 attorneys from around the world participated in the event.
