Orthopaedic surgeons certified in Sports Medicine

Christian Bean, MD and Christopher Meriam, MD, members of Green Mountain Orthopaedic Surgery recently received their Certified Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine. Brian Aros, MD, also a member of the practice, did a fellowship in Sports Medicine at Ohio State University as part of his training. In addition to his newest certification, Dr. Bean is also a certified hand surgeon.

“The certification requires passing a national test on proficiency in the most up-to-date techniques for sports injuries and sports treatments. We wanted to assure ourselves that we are practicing the most current medicine and offering our patients the best possible care,” noted Dr. Bean. “To qualify for the test an orthopaedic surgeon has to have performed a certain number of arthroscopic procedures and spend a number of hours studying the literature to prepare for the test.”

According to the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) website and, according to their listing of Board Certified Surgeons in Vermont, Dr. Bean and Dr. Meriam are the only orthopaedic surgeons in Vermont with their Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Certification.

Additionally, Dr. Bean is the only one listed as having both his certification in Hand Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine in New England.
