Sean will oversee the planning, organization and management of all programs and activities at the Graduate School as it continues to fulfill its vision to offer responsive, innovative professional studies of the highest standard in the areas of management, technology, and teaching. "Part of why I'm excited to be joining the Marlboro College Graduate School is that I think the work they're doing models a globally informed, locally grounded approach that is deeply needed," says Conley. " The focus on technology, sustainability and teaching address some of the key challenges that individuals, businesses and communities are struggling with right now.
Previously, Sean spent ten years at Brattleboro's School for International Training, serving first as Associate Professor and Program Director of a joint project between SIT and Tokyo Jogakkan Junior College in Japan. He then returned to Vermont and served as Assistant Dean of SIT's Department of Language Teacher Education for four years, and Associate Dean of the same department for another two years prior to being named Associate Dean for Academic Administration of the SIT Graduate Institute in 2007. In this position Sean assumed the role of Associate Dean for all seven of SIT's graduate programs, overseeing program development, review and strategic planning for a variety of on-campus, low-residency and online programs. Most recently, Sean was the Chair of the Department of English Language Studies at The New School in New York City, where he was recruited to play the lead role in the launch of their new online M.A. in TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) in 2008.
"I'm drawn to Marlboro's signature style of blended education -- mixing elements of online learning with classroom instruction -- a design that was recently highlighted by the U.S. Department of Education as more effective than either fully on-line or campus based models," says Conley. "I think the school has a great future ahead of it and I'm excited to be able to play a part in that."
Sean received his B.A. cum laude in English Literature along with a TESOL Certificate from Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon; his M.A. in Teaching TESOL from the School for International Training's Department of Language Teacher Education; he has taken and taught in a Post-Graduate Certificate in Conflict Transformation from SIT's Department of Service, Leadership and Management.
