Experienced hospitalist joins Gifford Medical Center

Experienced hospitalist Dr. Jay Stearns has joined Gifford Medical Center’s inpatient care team.

Dr. Stearns previously worked as a hospitalist at Central Vermont Medical Center for two years and spent the prior seven years at hospitals in New Zealand and Australia, also as a hospitalist.

Before that, he was an internal medicine provider in Anchorage, Alaska, for six years.

A New Jersey native, Dr. Stearns earned his bachelor’s degree in biology at Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City and his medical degree at the University of the Northeast in Tampico, Tamps, Mexico.

He went on to a three-year internal medicine residency at Conemaugh Hospital in Johnstown, Pa., and earned board certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine.

His clinical interests include intensive care and treating infectious diseases.

He joins Gifford for the opportunity to work as a hospitalist in the state he loves – Vermont. It’s the next best thing after Alaska, he says.

Hospitalists provide care to hospitalized patients, freeing up primary care providers to spend more time in their outpatient clinics.

At Gifford, Dr. Stearns is part of a 24-hour team of physicians and physician assistants. The 25-bed hospital started its hospitalist program in 2006, when the concept was still novel for small hospitals.
