The Community College of Vermont (CCV) recently recognized four faculty members for their excellence in teaching. The awards were presented as part of at the College’s Faculty Summer Institute, a professional development day sponsored by the College. Faculty were nominated by staff and students and selected by a committee of CCV faculty. The faculty award recipients were Charles Emond, Eleanor Wilson, Heather Woodworth, and Greg Matses.
Eleanor Wilson lives in North Carolina and teaches Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting, both online. Her nomination letter stated, “Eleanor is an extraordinary instructor in every way. She conveys a tremendous amount of kindness and respect, and her caring for the students as individual learners is clearly evident throughout the course. She is extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter and enthusiastic about the learning process.” Wilson has a B.A. from Boise State University, a M.B.A. University of Maryland, and a Ed.D. from Temple University.
Charles Emond teaches online courses for the College from his home in Thailand, including Western Civilization and Homosexuality in Western Civilization. Emond was recognized for his enthusiasm and passion for teaching and learning, and for creating a climate of mutual respect among all participants in the classroom. Emond holds a B.A. from Queens College, a M.A. from Keene State College and a M.L.S. from Dartmouth College.
Heather Woodworth, who teaches at the Burlington CCV location, was acknowledged for encouraging a free flow of thoughts and ideas among all students, while facilitating the curriculum throughout, and for her passion regarding the academic and personal growth of her students. Woodworth teaches English Composition and World Mythology. She has a B.S. from Southern Connecticut State University and a M.A.T. from the University of Vermont.
Greg Matses teaches Guitar I & II, Introduction to Rock and Roll, and Guitar Ensemble at the College’s Burlington location. His nomination stated, “Greg is uncompromising in his commitment to the progress of every student. He has single-handedly created a sizable student following at CCV in Burlington. Students flock to his classes because he is a well-known musician in the community, and they find an articulate, engaging, very cool instructor who is motivational and incredibly energetic in his teaching.” Matses holds a B.A. from Colby College.
The Community College of Vermont employs 650 part-time faculty at 12 statewide learning sites and online. The College serves 10,000 students each year, offering 17 associate degree programs.
