John Lens, P.E., has received the 2011 Vermont Engineer of the Year award from the Vermont Society of Professional Engineers. Lens, a civil engineer, has been a principal at GeoDesign, Inc., in Windsor, VT, since 1995 and is currently enrolled in a doctoral program at the University of Vermont. His recent professional experience includes the Crown Point-to-Addison emergency ferry crossing docks, and he is the author of numerous technical papers on deep pile foundations and contaminated soils. Lens mentors high school students, and he serves as a regional coordinator for MathCounts Vermont, which encourages middle school students to develop their math skills. He has also served on Windsor’s town planning commission. The Engineer of the Year award is based on educational and professional achievements, professional society activities, continuing competence, engineering experience and contributions, civic and humanitarian activities and public stature.
Amanda Hanaway-Corrente, E.I.T., has received the 2011 Young Engineer of the Year award. She is employed as a project engineer at Utility Risk Management Corporation in Stowe, VT. Hanaway-Corrente, a civil engineering graduate of the University of Vermont, is responsible for modeling various aspects of high voltage transmission lines. She is active in professional societies, including having served as the 2009-10 president of the Vermont Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
