NANO SCIENCE: The Science of the VERY SMALL

Celebrates the amazing science behind the Teeny-Tiny

All day at ECHO, Saturday, March 29

ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center in Burlington once again partners with the UVM Society of Physics Students to present NanoDays as part of a nationwide festival of educational programs about nanoscale science and engineering.

ECHO guests will witness a variety of nano science phenomena and learn about this fascinating science. Throughout the first floor of ECHO, visitors will be encouraged to experience many of these activities first-hand with the enthusiastic help of UVM students. Guests will explore capillary action (think “wicking”) and non-Newtonian fluids, investigate new nano products and materials as well as use electricity to make a nickel coin look like a penny. There is also an opportunity to imagine what society might be like if everyone wore invisibility cloaks! There will be an example of the world’s lightest solid material (an aerogel), a space shuttle tile, and a commercial example of a non-Newtonian shear thickening polymer called D3O used for impact protection. There will also be displays on magnetic memory, piezoelectric materials, as well as memory metal.

NanoDays is organized by the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network (NISE Net), and takes place nationally from March 29 - April 6, 2014. This community-based event is the largest public outreach effort in nanoscale informal science education and involves science museums, research centers, and universities from Puerto Rico to Alaska, and everywhere in between.

ECHO features 70 live species, more than 100 interactive experiences, changing and permanent exhibits and seasonal events — all exploring the Ecology, Culture, History, and Opportunity for stewardship of the Lake Champlain Basin. The 2.2 acre Leahy Center environmental campus is also highlighted by the Lake Champlain Basin Program Resource Room, UVM’s Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory, Lake Champlain Navy Memorial, ECHO’s  Gift Shop, and café featuring food prepared by Sugarsnap. Open year-round, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve & Day.
